Lots of great towns in the NW part of the state. They can’t play B-ball or football very well; not sure why? Lol seriously though pick a town in the NW and it’s 99% great people just like most of the west except for CO (no offense to Jason, Otis, or Tom lol)

Born, raised, and still live here. A lot of my family is still in the area.Great people, weather extremes, can be kinda tough to make a decent living sometimes depending on what you do or want to do. Every community has it's own little idiosyncrasies and it can take a long time to not be considered 'the new guy' when you move into a lot them.

As for the high school sports, well NW KS is always well represented at the State tournaments, playoffs, and Track meet. Like any rural areas the local schools are generally well supported by the community for the school activities. Sometimes in early season tournaments we even drift south and east and give some basketball lessons.......hehehe!

Oh yeah, we got some really good people in this area, too. Did I mention that already?

Marty, it is still Kansas. Just like Minnesota is still Minnesota no matter how far you get away from the Twin Cities. I fell in love with the Republican River country on both sides of the border. It is a pocket, one of several in the United States. Make sure you check plague spread as it will factor into later events.Nuclear drift is another factor, Denver and Cheyenne Mountain, Wyoming silos.
As long as you have a well, lack of water is a plus, as in a meltdown, people are not going to have gas for cars and their shoes will have worn out 150 miles before they get to you with a case of the diarrhea from chugging dirty water.
As long as you can build and fix things, you can make a living anywhere.

One more thing, just read someone say "Terrible Winters". Kansas does not have winter. It snows there and melts. Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas and Minnesota have terrible winters. It snows there and it stays, with 40 to 60 below zero, and hurricane winds. That country is still harvesting the refugees who think it is just another part of America.

A well known trapper, no longer on here, used to do some serious bobcat trapping near the Colorado border. Did pretty well. I think he might still be doing it. So there's decent fur numbers in that area. Spent the night at a hotel in Goodland in 2004, on the way to NTA convention in Columbia. Would love to have a month or so to poke around there setting traps!

Colby and Goodland both have community colleges with a fair population base. Hays has a state college but not really NW Kansas.

Lots less people, especially liberal loosers....my county here is over 100,000 now and getting more crowded every day. If I see another 'we believe' blm yard sign I am gonna puke. Now they have started putting that garbage on the vehicles.

I need to re-start up a solo home repair/landscape business and support myself. That is my main concern. St Francis/Goodland is looking good to me from my internet research but I need to get in the vehicle and take a week to explore that whole area. Looks like there are 3 smaller public areas that a guy can pack into and camp out in...

I was actually interested in the north of the state from Concordia to Goodland but am thinking the more rural western end may be better for me only more challenging to make $. I am also considering going back to college and finish a 2 year degree.

Just way to many liberal folks in Douglas county for me to want to stay here....came here in 92 from a east coast big city area. So I have been in Kansas almost 30 years and it has been a good state to live in other than the tendency to elect liberal women to governor...my understanding is that the far n/w is a solid conservative area.

I also have chronic sinus issues that seem to be getting worse and want to try living in a more arid region.

Western KS is surely likely to be getting some overflow from Denver........taking advantage of cheap housing yet not too far from the city.
