This what you looking for?

Quote
Long story but will try to make it short.
My 19 yrs. old Son is an avid coon hunter and is dog sitting a hound for a friend. The dog he is taking care of was recently purchased for $20k and has won $30k in the last 3 months. The owners also gave him permission to hunt this dog while he keeps her for a week.
Wednesday night, this dog chased a coon up a 14 inch drain tile what ended up being 500 yards from the creek and in the middle of my bean field.
So in the middle of the night, we finally figured out where the subterranean critter was and we dug her out with a backhoe, 6 foot down in the main tile drain for my farm, 500 yards from the tile entrance. The dog is fine and ready to hunt.
My Son contacted the owner during this ordeal and he said, "what ever it takes, we will pay any bill to save her."
So we trampled a good 1/4 mile of beans driving in and out, dug and trampled a 50 foot circle of beans, had to repair 8 foot of drain tile, 6 hours of backhoe time and 8 hours of my time.
Don't want to be a - but I told my boy, "Someone needs to make me whole".
What's it worth and who needs to pay?
Obviously not going to take money from my Son and the ones who own the animal have the deep pockets to pay for damages. They gave him permission to work the dog.
I know - happens but I am not taking it in the rear on this one. Tired of being the nice guy.

It's quite a story. I understand the farmer not wanting to take the loss, but it was his son that let the dog get into that predicament. I really don't know what I think about it, lol.

This happens more often than you might think.

Would be worse on another farmer's property and he wouldn't allow a retrieve?

Happened several times to me. Worst time I had 2 pups in a hollow tree. Little bitty hole right at the ground. One was my youngest daughter's male she showed. She was crying, I thought I was gonna have to go home and get some grease lol. I don't know how they got in there, but I finally laid down, stuck my arm in to the shoulder and waited till I felt a foot. Got both hind legs, folded the tail down and worked em out backwards. They were a little skinned up, but at least they went home that night

I've seen that before. Definitely what was going through my mind that night. I dragged a big limb over and put it in front of that hole so I wouldn't have to worry about that happening again

If you're taking care of a $20k dog, keep that in the living rm, and don't let it leave your sight!

I'm a friend on Facebook with the 19 year old son. They posted pictures of the extraction on Facebook. It happens.

My thoughts too.

I lost a "friends" dog. I let it off the chain. It never broke stride, it never looked back, never to be seen again.

Why in the world would you hunt a 20k dog that does not belong to you? Why in the world would you give someone else permission to hunt your 20k dog?

This morning they asked how they found it.
Reply was "Amazingly to me, you can hear a dog barking 5 foot underground"
I think that's impressive!

These competition dogs need to be hunted. If the dog won 30G's in three months , I'll bet he was hunted at least 4 nights a week.the kid was probably getting paid to hunt it.

Coonman needs to learn how to train dogs.
Would be a game changer $$$$$ !

I can see charging for the material items like tile repair and crop damage but charging them time while helping your son seems a bit much.

Re: Any coonhunters that can cut & paste ? - 07/25/20 11:48 AM

My response probably won’t be popular but having been a coon hunter and experiencing similar predicaments this is my opinion.

1.The person handling/hunting the dog is solely responsible for damages.
2. If your going to hunt/board high price hunting dogs you should charge appropriately for your services perhaps even a legal contract.
3. You had an open tile large enough for a hound to enter. No grate or bars covering it? Just a matter of time before something got up there died and possibly got lodged. Causing you the same expense.
4. The boy hunted the property knowing a large open tile existed. He had to have run coons in there before... knew the possibility was probable
5. Can’t farm insurance cover the damages?

Just my logic, sounds like a poor victimized farmer to me looking to place liability on someone else. Any farmer around me would say. Your dog your problem. In this case it was the farmers boys “dog” and he made it their problem but wants someone else to foot the bill. Nonesense

I have figured crop damage before for a dig to repair a underground electric 3 phase. Doubled the acreage, doubled the crop yield, and doubled the price. Still didn't amount to very much. The farmer should just enjoy the experience and quit holding out his hand.

Why would you pay 20k for a dog?

I guess if the dog makes you money, it’s worth it, never mind.
