When are you going to start trapping this season?

When are you going to start trapping this season? - 07/31/20 04:14 AM

I will start when our wolf season opens in mid-October and will also get some coyote sets out along the wolf line, high elevation. But I won't start really going after coyotes until Halloween. Water critters open Nov 1st but won't hit them hard until February or so. I'll get some otter sets out starting Nov 1, as well as mink but really will be focusing on coyotes, coon and wolves from Fall to mid January. Then water critters in the spring. Last year I think I was overwhelmed trying to trap everying at once all fall and winter.

Well, if the world isn't burning and aliens haven't invaded, then about the second week of November. Plan to focus more on coyote this year and scale back the coon line. Beaver and rats in mid Dec. after deer season.

But if all of us stopped trapping just because prices suck, then we lose our very valid argument that trapping is conservation/management. Personally I will still trap even though prices may suck. Maybe not running and gunning, but I will still trap hard. Because I enjoy it immensely and also because it benefits the management of wildlife.

No market or poor market ? Can't see coyote not having a market.

I'm fine with low market coyotes. I only caught 8 coyotes last year in my second season. So I don't expect to catch too many more than that. I will tan them if they aren't worth it. I'm fine selling low price coyotes. $30 to $50 fine by me. I tanned 18 coons last year and had no problem selling them for $50+ each as well as giving some away to friends who wanted some. I am not trapping beaver this year except for bait and some meat for myself. Like kyron said, low market is okay with me, no market would mean I just don't trap as hard but still will trap pretty hard.

Critters here are a nuisance so trapping will commence as the crops are harvested. I will be collecting more glands than skins if there is still no market.

Small line for fox & coon from Oct. 25 until Nov. 10th or so. Shut down until deer season ends December 13, then hit it all until various seasons end. Might let my son leave out a few traps at our neighbors place all season so he has something to do in his first season.

Plus or minus a few days around Thanksgiving. If coons are hitting corn bags or silos hard I will have to start earlier but I don’t like to.

Re: When are you going to start trapping this season? - 07/31/20 11:42 AM

May do that. I am going to trap someplace. There is always trap for pay. I have always stayed away from that because I want to go at my pace. When your getting paid you have to stay with it. I used to love to drive. Every day was a new adventure. Now its a job I have to force myself to do some days. I don't want trapping to be that way. Thanks Ang

Heading out this afternoon to scout out a new area for this fall's adventures. 4 hour drive to new grounds with promises of big coyotes so thick they jump in the back of your truck as you drive through the fields. Nice thing about the poor market will be the advantages of less competition for properties.

Dec.1... cherry picking the farms and cherry picking the fur... probably just cut the glands and pitch a lot.

Re: When are you going to start trapping this season? - 07/31/20 02:33 PM

Already started raccoons attacked my garden and chickens. Caught four raccoon babies in one live trap. Fur trapping about November 1 most years - water and land open then to trapping and furs start to be in good shape from then on. Lucky that I drive an hour to work every day so I check traps on the way to work thru Federal and State lands.

Isn't that called wanten waste? If you can't respect the bird enough to clean it or give it to someone who will eat it, than why shoot it? Antis love this crap. Keep it up and we'll lose this too!

Trapping skunks round the chickens now. I did real well on the juveniles two years ago. Fur trapping sometime in November after I fill my deer tag.

Re: When are you going to start trapping this season? - 08/01/20 03:37 AM

I was planning on waiting untill mid November before running hard. Maybe a dozen coyote sets on my farm in mid Oct when season starts. BUT I STARTED TONIGHT!!! For garden pest. Something has been eating tomatoes cantaloupe , and melons.
I started taking night time strolls with the 12g double. Shot one opossum last night heading out of the garden towards the blueberries I thought problem solved But this evening went out to check for damage an saw a coon print 3' before entering the garden. Sure enough two more cantaloupe had holes and were empty out.

I try not to trap much around the house due to cats. But now I have two dp and one box trap set. Each baited different. One with peanut butter, one BlackBerry jam on bread, and the box trap with both of those + mapls syrup and some of the runed cantaloupe. Over kill but I'm hoping if the traps will avoid cats but if no maybe one will stay open for the coon.

Re: When are you going to start trapping this season? - 08/01/20 10:02 AM

After Thanksgiving for sure.
Our season opens november 1st but that is always way too early for our coon and coyote on our end of state. Much better quality after Thanksgiving. Cat season opens Dec. 1st and its too early for our cats also but it works and runs well into February. Anyway, I like to start after Thanksgiving. That way rifle deer is pretty much over except for a few choice seasons, bird hunters have about a month behind them too, most of crops are out, furnis better quality, and I can have many b of my locations to myself by then for rest of the winter...except for the coyote pickup army but I deal with them best I can.

How many pets go in the garbage every year?

How much food gets freezer burnt and ends up in the garbage every year?

I get what you are saying but if we lose anything, it will be because of our own pitching a fit over it.

hate being a damper but i hear what trappers say nothing from buyers or auctions this will be worth that were sold out need all i can get theres a big want for coon look for a lot higher prices how many years now have the low grade fur been tossed now it used to sell for gas money if there is no market are you going to run freezers untill next year or the next or the next when there is know talk from buyers and auctions i consider that not having a market

I have a friend that drives 30 miles to work so he sets and checks on the way home. Usually catches about 150 coon per year and a yote now and then in 220's and 160's. He traps road ditches.

Will do open water rats from the get go. I am in the process of putting together my line for the two weeks prior to our deer season where I will do dry land coon and canine in the earlier AM and my river lines later in the day.
Have done more ADC this year than most years. About 20 critters to date almost all coons only two grinners. No skunks yet.

New to the sport here.

I have some questions obviously.

Do furs on different animal come in prime at different times?
For example, do raccoons have a better coat in October vs muskrats in the same time period?
Do people focus on different animals at different time?

I'm a coon trapper. I hit them between the deer rut and thanksgiving here. I then hit them during their rut in early February. There's usualy a thaw around that time.

I have a couple farms that raise sweet corn for their income and count in me keeping coon numbers way down. #1 enemy of these guys is coon. They would kill them all year long just to save crops. I get to go in and at least get something of value if there is any market for coon. He has other stuff on the property too, beaver, coyote, mink. Got a cat there last winter too.
I worked really hard for 40+ years to keep relationships strong with landowners on some of my ground and I don't want to lose any of it if I sit out a season either. A few guys around here would love to move in and take over if I sit out. Also, got a kid coming back from college with a long winter break and is looking forward to running traps all day when I'm at work. No better way for him to spend his day with couple of his college buddies, right?
