Got me a new toy

Got me a new toy - 08/06/20 07:14 PM

I suck at welding but I've wanted a mig for years. I have a stick welder for heavy stuff but nothing for small stuff. Now I need some scrap to practice on. Maybe I'll practice while building a cart for it?

I was kind of afraid to open this at first.

I did it with my hands over my eyes and peeked through my fingers.

What gas do you use for aluminum?

Re: Got me a new toy - 08/06/20 07:22 PM

I have a similar thing from Lincoln. They are fine for the little jobs and faster than TIG ...... I used mine to repair the deck on my new to me brush hog during the last couple of days. The down side it the duty cycle is not all that breath taking. and one spends a lot of time waiting fo the thing to cool down for the next foot worth of bead.

I got one several years ago but it quickly got absorbed up at my son's place. He loves it and Dear Old Dad just might buy himself one...again.

I am not a professional welder, but I had to use a spool gun to weld aluminum, pushing aluminum wire through a long whip was problematic. I also use 100% argon when welding aluminum.

A fine choice of a welder. I have its bigger brother and zero complaints.

Even the pro models with the long whips and a puller motor can be a challenge with aluminum.

Stock up on tips and nozzles!! They are fun to work with.

I’d like one for my trap shed. Have fun and good luck. Welding is intimidating to most but not hard at all.

Re: Got me a new toy - 08/06/20 11:03 PM

Buy some non-stick cooking spray to spray on the nozzle/ tips to keep any spatter from sticking to them. They'll last longer.

Not on aluminum, straight argon. Mix gases are for steel. 75-25 smooths out the arc and allows you to get up on spray arc on steel.

That is a good hobby machine - you are going to find allot of projects for it. Your friends will find even more projects for it!

Re: Got me a new toy - 08/07/20 05:28 PM

Just remember ..... If all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a messiah ....... Stay away from pots and cutlery just because you have to weld something or the missus is going to beat you with a broom.
