On a brighter note, it's supposed to hit Chicago with 100 MPH winds.

Well we got blasted! Just got done assessing damages at the farm. Trampoline stayed in place. Our electric pole blew over. My chicken tractor that had 30, 4 week old meat birds blew 15 ft and killed all but 3 chicks. All my eggers in the coop are fine. Lambs and pigs are good too. The rest of my sweet corn is played flat on the ground along with all my tomatoes.

I was working at a new Kwik Star on Center Point road and 42nd st. Just left Cedar Rapids as it hit. Got to Center Point and stopped at the truck stop just off of 380. That wind was relentless. You couldn't see 10 feet in front of you.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/11/20 12:41 AM

Cargill plant I work at sustained a lot of roof and side panel destruction. Trees down everywhere. Lot of damage to surrounding structures. Plant running on generator power only with power out in surrounding area as well as in metro. Counted around 10 semis on there sides going north on 380 out of Cedar Rapids in 10 miles. Kinda looks like a war zone.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/11/20 02:47 AM

It was derancho storm, I think some kind downdraft , we had one around 09 somewhere, sunday in August, 90-100 mph wind driven hail, probly 3 Rd of every roof in town had be replaced. Living down south in tornado areas. Would be bad on roofs. Windriven hail well destroy shingles in short time. Look like someone took shotgun to siding

Forreston got hit hard with winds. I didn't here any damage at Groenewold's but a lot of damage in trailer park behind them. I live in Baileyville and had a little over a inch of rain and no damage. Tanker trailer was blown in Freeport. The wind and rain was crazy.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/11/20 03:09 PM

Generators and chainsaws are in high demand. Electricity is still off in most of Cedar Rapids I believe so stores can't open. Menards in Norfolk NE sold 5 generators this morning heading to Iowa.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/11/20 11:41 PM

Casino closed to public but let tribal families stay if they lost dwellings, Idk if they open today yet. No power lots of towns along 30, some gas stations open but lines are blocks long to get to pumps.

I am working down there, just got back home. There are so many power poles snapped, trees uprooted or sheared off. Dozens of semis and campers at RV place tipped like dominos. All intersections with no lights. Cell service is sketchy at best. Wouldn't even want to guess how many signs twisted or snapped off. I- beam ones and huge ones with mega anchor bolt patterns. Lot of roofs gone. Unreal, like a tornado with a 30 mile wide path. On my way back North , every gas station had 50-100 card waiting for gas. The power companies have there work cut out to get power back on in the near future.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/12/20 02:00 AM

Still no power at my place. I'm way out in the sticks so probably not a high priority. Except the kids aren't happy they cant play on their new trampoline. My power pole fell within 20 feet of it so they've been told to steer clear of that. Cousin let me borrow his generator and my house is set for it so we have fridges, freezers and water again. Getting nervous because the pigs were getting low. Was planning on hauling buckets of water from the creek so were relieved that we have power to run the well.

I am getting some fairly lucrative offers to go run claims in IA so it must have been a bad storm.

A guy can think, boy we have a beautiful crop and now the prices will be cheap and in 24 hrs he gets wiped out and now he thinks prices will go up and I don't have much to sell.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/12/20 02:34 AM

The ex-wife left this morning to go help her Sister there. She stopped in Norfolk NE and bought the last two generators at Menards. Sounds like a nightmare.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/12/20 03:53 AM

On the Ag radio stations they say it was 500-750 miles long. One point they kept emphasizing was the damage to field corn and grain bins. The main point on the grain bins was many of them had cell and WiFi antennas on them and the impact that might have on schools in our current situation. Interested to know if that is relevant??

I was watching some news footage on the news of folks cleaning up with chain saws. Oh boy! I wanted to tell most of them what I tell my kids when we'r cutting wood. " Slow down, Just cuz a tree's on the ground doesnt mean its done trying to kill ya!"

Lots of stuff under pressure, overhead etc. Also, there were people rushing in and reaching over saw to pull branches, stepping over logs right by guy running saw. Scary stuff.

Ex called this morning. The whole town of 125,000 was hit hard. roofs, fences, utility poles, siding, trees, power lines. Going to be a long haul and I'm sure most of central Iowa is the same. Most corn laying flat it sounds like.

You can see from this satellite image of all the flattened crops in the swath the storm took across the center of the state...

Being a life long Iowan, I've seen plenty of wind damaged corn, but I have NEVER seen entire fields laid completely flat like this.

Is that the light stretch right down the center of the state?

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/13/20 02:55 AM

Yes it is.

Towards the right side of the state, the city you see dead center of the storm path is Cedar Rapids.

I sold a stihl chainsaw yesterday to a lady from Marshalltown. She was in MN on vacation when it hit. She told me there are no saws or generators left around her home, so she was picking one up to bring with.

Re: Cedar Rapid IA just thrashed by high wind - 08/13/20 04:30 PM

Crop reports state that 43% of IA's corn and bean crop suffered severe damage. It will remain to be seen how much yield will be impacted but the corn and bean markets have gone up about 15-20 cents since the reporting.
43% of IA's crops is about 10 million acres.

You aren't wrong! ^^ smile One of my employees was helping his chainsaw newbie brother clean up in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday evening and the brother sliced his leg open with his saw and my employee thankfully has been trained in First Aid and was able to properly stem the bleeding and get him to the hospital, etc. As I understood the story, 911 calls cannot be logged right now, or they couldn't yet on Tuesday, and they had to transport him to the ER since they couldn't get in touch with emergency personnel. I am told that the attending physician thanked my employee for saving his brother's life...and...that there had been 6 chainsaw accidents present in that ER in the first 24 hours following the storm.

Yikes...slow down people!

A lot of tractor-trailers blown over, too. I feel bad for those drivers. Even if they knew it was coming, they can't out run it and there's no place to hide.

They were trying, went by several on 380 that were using the ditch hills to hide from it. Followed a 3/4 ton pickup and camper driving through Hiawatha, they pulled over as it was whipping, came back down Tuesday it was on its side , both truck and camper. Still there today.

We had power restored at 17:00 today. House got some damage again but nothing like the tornado in 2018. Had to throw out everything in the freezer and fridge, bummer.
