John Deere 1010 - 08/15/20 11:58 PM

Bought me a Deere 1010 gas tractor at a local auction today. Looks and runs real good. 3 point isn't working it appears though. Looking forward to tinkering around with it.

Good buy, the 3 point first check your depth control, then make sure the rods are moving going into the housing, if the arms haven’t moved in a while the might be froze up in the upper plate, also inside the top plate is a little lever that moves and it can break. If it has a diaphragm type carb dont use any alcohol in the gas, it also helps to keep another diaphragm on hand because when it goes bad you will sit wherever you are, you also need to run a lead additive or leaded race fuel so the valves get plenty of lube, because it probably has soft seats.

here is THE PLACE for all tractor info https://www.mytractorforum.com/forums/john-deere-forum.12/
even ALL riding mowers of ALL makes are covered here and with over 100k members and mechanics its an awesome source of info.
BEWARE the 1010 has POSITIVE GROUND at the battery and the stinking steering drive rod goes THRU the gas tank.

Cut my teeth on a 1010. That was a big tractor in my youth (about 1960 +/- a few years).

Turned one on it’s side in a big ditch. Didn’t get hurt. Couldn’t hurt the 1010.

Also had a 40.

Well, she's certainly being very responsible with that mask on.

I had one in the tricycle configuration and had forgotten about the steering drive rod going thru the gas tank. I'm not into working on tractors any more than I have to so I ended up selling it and getting a New Holland TC40 in 2002. It was quite the upgrade and I still have it. That old gas engine in the 1010 sure used a lot of fuel compared with the diesel in the TC40.

I quite got to like working on Tractors when I don't actually have to use them. So does the missus. I am thinking of buying and old Ford or similar just to restore it then sell it and get another.

Scuba, you hit it on the head. Working on them is no fun when you need to be doing work with them. There is not much I like less than going to do a job with a piece of equipment only to find I have to fix it first. That's the source of my aversion to working on tractors.

Sounds good. I just got everything degreased and pressure washed. I think its low or empty on hydraulic fluid. Gonna fill it and see what's up.
