17hmr - bolt or semi?

17hmr - bolt or semi? - 08/16/20 03:58 PM

Has anyone had experience with the semi verson? I had the bolt action 17hmr and sold it years ago...regrets and now it seems like no one stocks it in store but the semi took its place. the bolt action was quite the shooter.

watching video, doesnt seem to be bad if the ammo is consistent but for me always loved bolt actions, but which route would be better? Always hands down for accuracy with the bolt action? kinda debating even getting 22 mag but i think it would primarily be for small game like squirrels and woodchucks... 150 yards max at the most on groundhogs or the occasional fox in season.

Guess looking at options and choices between the 22 mag and 17hmr...

Picked up a Savage B Series .17hmr bolt action a few months ago and I've been very happy with it. Plenty accurate for me. Found one at Cabelas.

I recently bought the Savage A17 semi-auto. I like the way that it shoots and it seems to be very accurate too. But....I think I would really prefer the bolt action model myself.

Have a buddy with the a17. He has always ran the savage marketed ammo in it without any trouble. In my opinion the best thing you can do with a 17hmr is trade it off on a 22mag though!

is the 22mag noticeably louder than the 17 hmr?

I know this is off topic but I decided on the .17WSM instead of the .17HMR. Savage bolt. Don't know if anyone makes an semi-auto.

Bolt in 17hmr

some of the Semis had out of battery issues and when they did they shot shrapnel much more pressure than 22lr out the ejection port.

some of the Semi are also ammo sensitive.

If you don't use their ammo it has trouble jamming in the auto . Bolt guns never go wrong.....

Take a look at CZ if you consider a bolt gun.

Im usually a bolt guy, but wanted a semi for a specific hunting style needing fast follow up shots. No shrapnel issues as Greencounty mentioned because Savage uses a delayed blowback system (some of the other dont..be cautious with them). It eats nearly any ammunition that Ill feed it, not just the A17 CCI ammo. Trigger stinks, it not a regular accutrigger like on their higher end rifles, but still shot good out of the box. I ended up bedding the action and that alone turned it into a tackdriver. Im happy with it for my purposes....my 2 cents.

I have a A17 it never jams, very accurate and nearly perfect for calling raccoons. Bolts are WAY TOO SLOW when you get 4-5 coons bailing out of a tree or two at the same time. Highly recommend the A17. I shoot Hornady 17 gr ammo. Knocks the crap out of coons.

I have a Volquartsen semi auto and a Savage bolt---both are extremely accurate!!! Federal ammo has been the most accurate for me. Super squirrel guns....
