Looking great man! Thats how I built my cabin.
Nice straight logs too. I had a Heck of a time finding oak straight enough to use.

It's going to be really nice. Way nicer than mine. I have been scavenging scraps to build a storage shed for the purpose.
Keep the pictures of the progress coming and thanks for sharing I really enjoy it.

That's looking pretty good forester, but I wonder about your footing? It seems like you only have 6-4"x 6" for footing posts, they'll have quite a load on them!

What kind of tree? Are footing posts buried? Why not put insulation between logs before you roll the next log on top?

Re: Start of the new fur shed. - 08/24/20 06:16 PM
8 5×6s sitting on concrete pads. I know I probably should have put more money into the foundation but I didn't know if it was going to end up being a big bon fire or not .what u could find the posts sgould be able to support about 20000 each.
Yes they are red pine. My dad got bought out by a dot project. Had the property logged and had some 16 ft cut for the project.
I'm not full scribing so will insulate before I chink it.

Looking good, how many helpers do you have? Those logs are heavy even with your tractor doing the heavy lifting.
looking great , keep going

Re: Start of the new fur shed. - 08/26/20 09:02 PM
Mostly no helpers. My dad for light stuff but he's 75. So 1 and a half man crew. Worst thing is he was a carpenter for 35 years. Found out this is way beyond him. Cant cope with round wood i guess.

That looks like a worthwhile project. I hope you got those logs good. I have seen them built with popular logs, but a 2 foot over hang. And on sandy soil up high.

It makes you really appreciate log buildings for what they are when you figure 2 ambitious guys with pneumatics who know what they're doing can frame up the four walls of that building in a morning.

Re: Start of the new fur shed. - 09/08/20 03:31 PM
Looking real good.
I just cut the door in mine. It got old real quick climbing over the walls. Neighbor brought his tractor over to help but it wasn't heavy enough, guy nearly flipped it over trying to pick up the log. We've been using ramps and block and tackle. Won't be done till next year.

Re: Start of the new fur shed. - 09/08/20 10:58 PM
I was getting as high as I wanted to go with the old tractor glad we pealed them in May and lost a bunch of weight.
To tell the truth I enjoy working with them. Lots of work but its rewarding.

Man, I really loved this build. Now I have to say I'm sure disappointed in that roof. I just feel you sold yourself short on an awesome cool build. The rest I think looks terrific!!!

What species of tree are you using? The logs look perfect.

Re: Start of the new fur shed. - 09/17/20 11:49 AM
I wanted to do shakes but not at 400 a square. Logs are red pine out of a plantation. Guy that cut them for me didn't follow directions and left the butt cut on them. Was supposed to cut one 8 then the 16 footer.

Mortar and metal lath. See how it holds up. Can always be redone.

Re: Start of the new fur shed. - 09/29/20 07:31 PM
Looks good !
A couple of old timers ( both gone now ) built several log buildings using hardware cloth and mortar for chinking. The oldest building is over 20 years old and still looks good .
i built one and use mortar , mortar holds moisture , if I do it again I will use silicone, from the ones I've look at ,its a lot less work in the long, jmo
