Snaring question???

First year snaring. How do I get my snare loop to be round instead of teardrop shaped?

There are many differing opinions on round vs tear drop loops as well as loading snares. If you're new to snaring remain open minded, don't be afraid to try different cables, locks, components etc. some heavily loaded some almost no load. Keep in mind what looks really good in the shop/shed may not get the best results in the field. Not only are snares a very effective fur harvesting tool. I truly believe in a time of need a person could put a lot of food on the table with snares.

It doesnt have to have a round loop.

But round loop gives you a bigger opening and In my opinion that's a good thing.

Teardrop gives you a longer loop which is better than wider.

Why make It easier to see the loop by closing it up. Explain why a tear drop opening Is better then a round opening.

If your loop is teardrop because the lock is at a 12:00 position you don't want that, but if your definition of tear drop is maybe more oval shaped with lock at a 2 or 10 o clock position you may be good to go.

ADC does have good information.

Still catches fur with the animals head up or down.Its not any narrower than a round loop just longer heightwise.
Not a big advantage for small animals but definitely an advantage for wolf snaring-probably big eastern coyotes too.

Beav...I think it has to do with the gap the snare is gaurding/filling and the target animal.

Jasper...Guess maybe my point is don't take all the snares you have and do exactly the same thing to them all. Try the different things these guys are saying none of it is wrong. By doing so in the long run you will find something effective that works for you.

That may be true but your using more cable to do so. Can be an advantage in some states that restrict your loop diameters.

Ok here Is the situation with CRs. We here In WI have a loop stop so our loop opening can only be 12". So with a loaded CR I can have a loop opening of 12" X12". If I had a CR that wasn't loaded and It had a tear drop shaped opening I would lose probably 3" at least In the width of the opening. I don't see that as being a benefit. Maybe with a stiffer cable like 1X19 you could get away with a snare that wasn't loaded and still maintain a more round opening.

What's wrong with a tear drop shape snare loop in 7x7 cable or a slight tear drop with the 1x19 cable will catch any coyote out there as long as you get a snare set out in front of it.
I've made and used a lot of snares and have yet had a coyote care that the loop was a perfect circle and have a lot of friends who like using the snares I make that don't have problems either.

just want to throw this in there the snares NEWT makes are perfect circles and man are they fast. so if your looking to buy some that are already done NEWT's snares are them. if thats what you prefer.

Some animals will stop dead and back out on a snare when they feel the resistance from the support wire and back out. Loaded snares have a better chance of catching those animals. Animals that blow through a trail don't have a chance with either type.

Last season I literally caught a red fox just sniffing on a beaver snare. The snare was literally hanging off an perfectly vertical drop off that I still can't believe beaver were using. An unloaded snare wouldn't of caught her.

Unfortunately the SD card gremlin struck me and ive lost it. It was the darndest thing ever. When the landowner called me and told me I had a fox i wasnt imagining it being THAT snare at all.
