Re: Whats this. - 09/21/20 10:31 PM
Wallfur has it.Rail fork for changing out bolted rail.
We used them a lot on the section.
Sperry car would come in spring and fall,x-ray the rails, mark the defective ones.
Then the work train or boom truck would distribute good rail, then each section would follow the work train rolling out the defective rails and rolling in the good ones.
Boom trucks too slow compared to section gang, but OK for spot changeout here and there on defective rail found in the track by the section crew between sperry checks.Section trucks have hydraulic tools now like bolters and spike pullers and hammers.
Track speed was restricted with defective rail in the track so they all had to be changed out FAST.

Re: Whats this. - 09/22/20 12:46 AM
I installed cwr in the 80s,on the south end.Too hard to manage the cwr on the north line with the weather extremes and the remoteness means things need to be done by the crews in the bush.
Change a lot of broken rail when it gets down to 50 below.
You work MOW wallfur?

Re: Whats this. - 09/22/20 12:57 AM
yeah ......road master now....we have 90 degree temp swing here some days, but have far less broken rail with cwr.....pull aparts were a never ending thing here bolted rail...plus you don't have as many rail car detector defects...(bolt hole cracks)

Re: Whats this. - 09/22/20 01:02 AM
I retired in 2012,I was doing beaver control when I retired-best job on the RR,no stress, lol.Lots of overtime to build up the pension.
Was Gang foreman for quite a few years 80's and 90's.Did some track inspection too.Boring job that.
Things changed a lot on the RR over the 36 years I worked there. After a season on the steelgang it was nice to get back up north on the section.
hardly any men working now compared to back in the day.I was glad to get out when I did.
What is the PLT for your ribbon rail where you are?
