Bout getting a smaller quick hound to take on trap line runs and to tree squirrels at the house. Would a mountain cur work? Wife don't want to tree em any more for me.

I got a treeing feist and he has an enormous hunting instinct. Absolutely loves to tree squirrels by day, coons night. Now he can't differentiate between squirrels, coons, foxes, or...let's say feral cats, but he oh so was bred for this very thing! Ours was a rescue dog. He runs with me in mornings, thing will go 6 or 7 miles nonstop and still play whe we get home.
He's ver well mannered, and a great fit for our family.
If you don't trim his claws they are hooked and he can climb trees too.

Does he mess with a set trap or steer clear of them?

Does have interest in the critters in the trap, I think they are small for a yote in a trap..

He has no fear of anything and loves to come up on coyote catches. He's always on a lead so I don't let him get close. Spent too much on shots to let him get into poo and blood and God knows what are in them.
Very good dog at least this one is a ton of fun

I have had my first with me on the line, never with a yote catch but a couple coon catches he has just ignored them lol.

Good looking little hound. Guess I'll be looking for a fiest or mountain cur pup. Couldn't get lucky enough to find a rescue pup like that. Looked at a rescue blue tick but don't think she would be quick enough on squirrels.

Feists are awesome little dogs. This one is a year old.

Our 11 year old feist is a pet. But I think he could have been an incredible squirrel dog. Trees cats and squirrels in the yard with zero training. Awesome pet. Likes for you to be in the yard with him but is not under your feet. Barks at strangers. Doesn't poop in the yard. Goes in the weeds. We have a very big yard and have never seen a pile in the short grass.

we got our feist through Dollys rescue he came up out of Oklahoma with his brother Bert. We tried to get both but Bert got adopted before we could get both so we ended up with Ernie (the wonder dog).
He was skittish as heck and wouldn't hardly come out from behind the couch for a week. We had to catch him in the corner to get a lead on him to take him out or anywhere. Took a lot of treats and time to gain trust. Now he's the most loyal and loving dog we've ever owned. When we go to my in laws farm for a day he bails out of the truck and runs all day with their dog, loves to get out and go.
He is crazy fast, he can keep right up with gunner running very fast on a four wheeler up the road. We call him the 40 mph couch potato. Can go that fast then literally trun off the energy as needed and be calm as day in the house.
He loves to hunt. Nothing more fun than an early morning run and he and I encounter a family of coons out on the road...its game on.
He and my son Gunner have become real buddies..
Ours came microchipped, neutered, all shots done, house trained too. He's been our indoor dog for the whole year and a half we've had had him, and I (knock on wood) have never had an accident to clean up in the house seriously. We trained him to go on weedy part of our property too and he won't go in our mowed lawn at all.
Has a loud bark for a little guy, and when he's excited like when he sees a coon, squirrel or cat, he has a high pitch whine and baying noise that is unmistakable. This little guy has some shoulders and can pull really hard for his size, surprisingly strong...hang onto the lead well when he sees something he wants to go after.

Here's Drifter's mountain cur. Squirrel treeing fool and will tree coon as well.

Mt Cur here and she will tree anything from a diller in a hole to a coon up a tree. Squirrels she does pretty good on keeping track of them when they timber from tree to tree. Anytime someone pulls in I know before they get within sight. Brindle couch tater that turns into a dynamo in a flash. Squirrels better be fast and get over 6 foot off the ground or she has em.

BuckShot loves treeing squirrels and it took very little training for him to get good at it. He is fast too. Never had him on the trap line, not sure how he would be.
