Hip issues

Hip issues - 10/02/20 06:37 PM

So, I hd my hips x rayed back in January because I was having pain in my left hip and groin area. It got bad enough that I went to the doctor yesterday and he advised a cortisone injection to see if I could prolong having hip replacement surgery. Got the injection this morning. Any fellow trappers dealt with this? I’m too young to feel this old!

I had the injections in one shoulder then the other and it would help, but surgery was the ultimate answer. Have a friend that had the hip replacement and he is as good as new.

I got my left hip replaced about 1.5 years ago. One of the best things I've done. If you go that route you won't regret it.

I have had both hips replaced in the last 4 years. The Rt. one was due to fall I took on the ice in February. Apparently it caused a tear in my labrum which kind of holds the hip joint together. By May I was in intense pain. Early June of that year I had the injection which lasted a couple days. Had the replacement done in September. Limped around using a cane through Fall but by Spring it was good.

The Left one went out due to limping around on my Rt. one so long. The Left one got very complicated due to me being told I had to lose 40 pounds before they would even touch me. At the time that was a very new requirement that exists pretty much all over. Lost 44 but it took so long my Left hip was pretty much mush with the ball out of the destroyed socket and I was in a wheelchair. Saw an Ortho in Mayo-Rochester and he got me in. Left the hospital the next day, pain-free.

I have no regrets about getting them done, in fact I was happy I did it. The level of pain I was in with both was incredible until I had them done, and no pain afterwards.

I think standard procedure is to start with cortisone and/or some therapy but the bottom line is new hip. You won't regret it. Some limp around for a number of years and then when pain so constant, they get a replacement and say, "Gee, I wish I had done this 3 years ago".

Groin pain goes with hip issues. Been there. New hip fixed it all.

The shots have helped my trapping partner a lot for the pain. He had one hip replaced in June and other will get replaced late November. The one thing about taking the shot is then you won't be able to have surgery for a few months. In your case you are probably hoping to be able to find a way to delay. I had my right hip replaced a year ago in July. I am doing very well.

My hips were hurting starting in my mid-late 50's. Strength/cardio exercise fixed that but it took a few years.

Ole is right on, I had one done 2 years ago and will probably do the other this winter. Only way to go.

I have been amazed at how fast strength leaves you after 50. My sciatic situation had me laid up for a bit and I noticed other pains that popped up. They have been curbed now that I am back doing regular workouts.

My wife is experiencing the same pain right now. It's gotten so bad that I have to put her sock and shoe on her left foot. She can't raise that leg up very far at all.

I had my right hip replaced 8 years ago. After several months of strength exercises , it has been great. Left hip has never bothered me. If your pain is getting bad , get in line to get it replaced. If you get it done be sure to do the exercises, before you damage the replacement.. old243

Re: Hip issues - 10/03/20 02:34 PM

Had a bilateral hips replaced a few years ago, I waited a long time, too long, Doc said mine were in the top ten of the worst hips he's ever seen....and he does thousands, lol
Bad hips also cause pain in the knees cause your so off. They do hips first, then knees if necessary, mine's necessary, but I keep putting it off, maybe this winter...and yes, do the therapy, in fact, do as much of the therapy exercises as you can BEFORE the surgery... I was back on the boat pulling pots in 6 weeks, my wife made me wait till the 6 weeks checkup....

Left hip went bad about 5 years ago.

I was compensating for my back/Leg pain from truck wreck in 2013 so
it eventually trashed my hip

Doc says lose 100 pounds before they can operate.

With near inability to walk, exercise is difficult.

It's going to be a long wait.

Had my right hip replaced in 2002 at the age of 50. Broke my pelvis when I was in my 20's roping a horse. My hip joint was out of line because of that and finally wore out. Replacement was the best decision I ever made.

When your bone on bone nothing works, nothing,,,,

Re: Hip issues - 10/03/20 05:39 PM

I had osteoarthritis in both hips, and have had both replaced. The first in 2008 , ( age 50 ), the other in 2012 ( age 54 ). I began having pain in my hips in 2004 while elk hunting in Utah. I initially took Celebrex, but it went off the market. I tried a couple other meds, but when the cartilage is gone, and you go bone on bone, there’s not much out there other than surgery. In 2006 and 2007, I got cortisone injected in my right hip a week or two before I left to go to Alaska and Newfoundland for a hunting trip. The shot gave only temporary relief, about 6-8 weeks.

I recovered quickly from both surgeries....I was able to go trout fishing in about a month after each replacement. Not much pain with either operation, didn’t need pain meds. Worst thing is the staples, they came out in 12-13 days.

Bryce raised a really good point. If you have the injection they will not replace your hip for 3-6 months due to infection risk.

My wife had her appointment today to get her referral to the Orthopedic clinic started! Her visits were well documented on what they tried and she will not do the shots. Thank goodness! It's about time.

Re: Hip issues - 10/08/20 01:10 AM

I have had both hips replaced. You can do strength training and cardio till the cows come home and if the hips are a bone on bone deal, it is not going to be
miracle cure.

My recommendation is to find out what exercises they recommend for physical therapy after surgery and do them before surgery. Before the first surgery my freaking leg hurt so much all the time I ended up babying it. It hurt a lot, day and at night sleeping was difficult. Rehab and PT was a bear.
Before the second hip replacement I trained a quite a bit. I have always exercised and for a lot of years worked a very physical job.
So I had a different attitude for the second surgery. PT went a bit easier.

Most surgeries for hip replacements I have heard about are awesome. I am glad I had them done as the extreme leg pain stopped. But, I have a lot of pain in the thigh, I suspect from nerve damage. Besides the pain, I have found it extremely difficult with some task. Climbing a step or extension ladder, getting on a staging, and sometimes taking stairs. But I keep on keeping on. Hiking up out of a swamp ain't what it used to be. LOL

Another thing I found when my hip joints wore out....knee pain. There wasn’t a thing wrong with my knees, but nerves were being inflamed that manifested in knee pain. Many days the knees hurt worse than my hips. All the pains went away after the surgeries.

Both my elderly Dad and I have hip issues. We both got an inversion table and that knocked out about 95% of the pain and issues (in my back as well). Can usually pick them up on craigslist for about half of what new prices are.

Re: Hip issues - 10/08/20 02:40 AM

sciatica cam make your hip feel like it is the problem I had sciatica really bad they xrayed my hip pain just radiates from the hip.

my uncle had his hip replaced cause it looked a little worn, turns out after all that the doc decided it was really sciatica.

about 4-5 years later my dad had his hip done , his really was bone on bone.

they were both about 63 when they had the surgery they are 4 years apart

when dad give in to the idea of a replacement the doctor usually says something like this is the worst joint I have ever seen you have been bone on bone a long time he has a hip and a shoulder replaced

Re: Hip issues - 10/08/20 12:31 PM

Sciatica, pain is caused by the nerve being pinched or irritated where it passes out of the spinal column. . As we get older , bone spurs form to support the verabraes. sometimes they narrow the opening where the nerve exits. In my case ,My legs and lower body would go numb , when I walked, not usually pain. It was corrected by operating and removing the offending narrowing. . . Numbness was gone . Just have to be careful , no real heavy lifting. Good luck pain is no fun . old243

I’ve been having hip pain for about 4 years now, my left one. If it’s sore in the morning I’ll use that Bio Freeze on it. It helps for about half a day. If I’m hunting and walking to my stand, it’ll start hurting then I have to stop for a bit. It sucks getting old
