Re: Hunting POLL - 10/07/20 12:17 AM
In NC it is deer. No more quail. Not as many squirrel or rabbits either. Turkeys have made a phenominal comeback. Our black bear population is really increasing and I think we have the heaviest black bears in the 48. You won’t even get your picture taken with a 600 lb bear. Got to be in the 700s. Those live in Eastern NC. Need a tractor to load them in a truck.

Charles,
Do you think the decrease in squirrels, quail etc could have anything to do with the phenomenal increase in turkey's? Just wondering.

I'll bite. What's the mechanism for turkeys to decimate grouse? Honestly curious.
Thanks

Coyotes and Raccoons
Enjoy watching my boy and his buddies rabbit hunt too.
I don't like setting around waiting for the animals. I like to make things happen. I really enjoyed driving deer when I was younger, shotgun season.

What would be the explanation for black bears in NC being 3 times the average size of bears in the rest of the world?

I love turkey hunting and big game with a bow, but if I only had one morning left on earth it would be a cold rainy day with a big south wind in a narrow slough shooting greenheads coming to the call.

Destroying the eggs.
I’ve never seen or heard evidence of turkeys destroying grouse eggs. I think the obvious cause is grouse need new growth 10-40 year old forests for nesting. Across the nation, the proportion of new growth forest is declining and grouse numbers follow. Turkeys are pretty adaptable and prefer older age class forests. Maybe I’m a simpleton but there used to be a lot more grouse when there was a lot more logging.
