Time to get a job - 10/07/20 03:11 AM

No more stimulus ,,, staying home making more on unemployment is over time to find a job.

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 04:29 AM

A couple years ago i lost my job after working since I was 15. I made the most of my unemployment -- and finally decided to do my own thing. Best move I ever made. After paying into it for 30+ years, I figured I could take a little out. It allowed my to clear my head and have a different perspective on the employer/employee relationship. I decided that employee was not for me. Best of luck in your journey. I cannot find fault with someone trying to better themselves through using what is available to them. If you are just using the system I have seen it and don't appreciate it.

I believe in most states employers pay unemployment insurance not employees, maybe Oregon is one of the few that employees contribute.

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 05:04 AM

so your original post was about others abusing the system, and not about yourself. if i misunderstood, i apologize. i know people whove chosen to not work, because the enhanced unemployment pays better. some people have no pride it seems. congrats on your retirement. i hope youre young enough to enjoy it for many years to come.

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 05:10 AM

I was speaking of the national wide stay home program some were faced with, some had it force on them. Then some took advantage of now it's going run out some folks probably need it. Some took advantage of it.
It was wrong from the start imo should have been equal to there wage until it was ok to go back to work because of forced stay at home order or request ? Which ever way you see it .

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 05:20 AM

i agree with your "equal to their wage" scenario. if someone worked sufficient hours last year to qualify for 350.00/week in unemployment, why should they be getting 950.00/week instead? i know these people personally. i also know some that took the PPP money, and stuck it in the stock market. their thinking was that if it was forgiven, great. if it wasnt, they pay it back at only 1% interest. this was federal money that was intended to help businesses in distress due to covid.

Did the same people that wrote the rules for milking the top write the same rules for milking the bottom? Who writes the rules for the guy in the middle getting squeezed from both sides? I think he must be on break!

Mother Nature's way is still the best. If a body or family can't take care of themselves, they get ate by the predators. Cruel, but Mother Nature isn't in debt 27 Trillion from handouts.

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 10:53 AM

Here's what gets my goat. People getting Social Security yet still under full retirement age aren't allowed to work for extra money if they get $1200 or more from SS. Some of the best, most willing people aren't allowed to work. Things are going to have to get much worse before it gets any better.

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 01:27 PM

It's a mixed up world. My SIL is a foreman at a small factory near home. They worked the Covid shutdown almost non-stop. I believe they laid off everyone for a short time. My SIL was off 2-3 times, but only a week or so at a time. Even pre-Covid they had an awful time finding enough workers to work full time.....at least ones that weren't late 3 days a week, or always catching brown-bottle flu on Monday morning. After some of these yahoos got a short lay off and were getting paid $900+ unemployment, they simply refused to come back in when my SIL called them back. I haven't drawn unemployment since back in the 80's, so I don't know today's rules. I couldn't file for benefits if I was fired instead of laid off, I had to actually go in to an office every week on a certain day, plus show that I was seeking work (list of places I'd asked for a job), and I had to accept any job that came along if it paid the same as my old job. Apparently that's all changed. Some of the folks on that $900+ are young folks with kids. As an old fart that had to live close to the bone for most of my working life, I guess I can understand some guys not seeking to go back to work until the gravy dries up. It would be a simple question of economics.....why work for $750 take-home when the taxpayers will hand you $900 for sitting around? Glad I was self employed most of my adult life.

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 01:33 PM

We had trouble getting people to come to work this summer because of the extra $600 in unemployment.
Most of the guys said why bother.
I just think its nuts to pay that much not to work.

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 01:40 PM

been working the whole time over time most of it I don't know if I could work in an Non Essential position or industry , just the way I am wired.

wife got laid off in May even though he position was considered Essential Infrastructure also , she was going to get laid off in mid April and they extended her , but hey closed the location she worked from and she was the only employee there.

she got her hustle on and interviewed mostly over the phone for every job she could find to apply for. which was only about 4.

the last day at her old job in the last hour her new employer called and offered her a job. she was the very first new hire since covid started she had 1 week that she was home then started her new job been working overtime nearly every week since.

In part of the world right now around western part of the state seen housing report put out for the area .
It needs 900 new living spaces a year and only 270 a year being built. Average cost of a house last month is 370k here ,,, its absolutely nuts to ask that kind of money for a house how are young folks even stand a chance getting a start. Nuts!!!!

Re: Time to get a job - 10/07/20 03:07 PM

I wish I lived in a utopia where there is a job behind every bush. Around here the shutdown pretty much killed the economy. The problem with looking for a job when the gubmint shutsdowns the place( temporarily )you used to work, is you have a commitment to work for the original employer whenever they may or may not get gubmint permission to reopen. Hard to commit to a new job, if you can find one, when you may have to work at the old job at a moments notice. It is complicated.

However, if I saved one life, it was worth it.

My brother has a little store, He can't find any help, about every store in the town he lives in have help wanted signs, no one wants to work when they are drawing unemployment and now extra state money. And in Oregon renters were not required to pay rent since March and now the Govenor has extended that deadline until the end of December. Most renters will never pay 10 months back rent and it will take a couple months to evict them. My son owns several rentals and has 2 people that are not paying rent, He offered to have them work at his restarant to start paying a little of their back rent each month...No takers

The money they use to pay unemployed people is our or their tax money.
The government gives billions away to other countries, some of them hate the USA 🇺🇸.
I don’t see anything wrong with helping people out that lost their jobs due to Covid , many are going to loose everything they have worked for..
Iv worked for 45 years as welder and milwright

Re: Time to get a job - 10/08/20 06:02 PM

I was laid off back in March due to covid in a round about way. All the shutdowns drove the price of oil into the dirt so all us oilfield hands, even though we were deemed “essential”, got the shaft. I took full advantage of the unemployment, but I never got more unemployment than I did working. I was bringing home $1300-$1500 a week working, $1000 on unemployment. I remodeled my house inside and out for the first two months, thinking I’d get called back to work any time. When that was done I did a lot of fishing. Got bored and picked up a few old junk lawnmowers and got them running. Then my mom offered to hire me to landscape her yard. The contractor quoted her $14,000 to level the yard and put in a sprinkler system. I told her I’d do the leveling, sprinklers, lay the sod, plant trees, put in brick flower beds, gravel the driveway, build a chain link fence with a concrete footing, and create her botanical garden like she wants for $7,000 and that’s what I spent the rest of my summer doing. It’s been great. I have 4 kids ages 1-11 and all this extra time I’ve been able to spend with them I wouldn’t trade for the world. Plus mom cooks for me every day! I put in for a real job last week with the gas company. If that doesn’t pan out I’ll probably spend the winter trapping. The wife and I have been smart with our money, so we’ve treated this whole pandemic like a big vacation.
