Auger

Alright let me say, I haven’t trapped like most of y’all. I only run a hand full of traps before/after work. But I am really interested in investing in a dirt hole auger for this season. What are some things I need to look in an auger? What are some things I should shy away from? Most of my soil is hard clay and seems the only rocks where I want to put my trap bed and dirt holes. I started using a bulb planter for dirt holes last year. I just turn it back and forth and the serrated teeth quickly cut into the ground allowing me to pull a round plug out. It's very quick and easy to use.

I did that with one of my wifes bulb planters years ago. The wood handle had gotten destroyed and she threw it out. I saw it and cut a piece of sassafras to fit and replace the handle with it a a wood screw on each end. It worked well and I had all but forgotten about it.

I bought a 2" x2' auger/ bulb planter off Amazon this spring to pre drill holes for my high tunnel. It worked well with a 24 volt cordless. It was designed long so you dont have to bend over as much.
Its probably a little long/ cumbersome for trapping but I have it so will try it out this year.

I think I paied $25 for it.

Are you looking for a manual or a battery powered 1?

I know most will laugh, but I took an earth anchor, cut the looped end off and ground the cut end triangular so it fits in my cordless drill. I think it cost $8. For all the more I do, it works well in normal soil. Once it freezes, it doesn’t do so well.

None of the augers work well in frozen ground. Most guys trapping in the hard conditions have gone to the higher volt cordless hammer drills with masonary bits and chisels. Me....when conditions get that tough, I go more to snares and cut back on the foot trapping. Work smarter, not harder!

I have an impact driver I'm thinking of trying. Papio Creek sells a bit big enough for bedding a trap, but I've never tried it.

I am trapping in cold weather conditions and I have used masonry drill bit for many years. It it works great for dirt holes and setting anchors in frozen ground . I just picked up auger this year and can't wait to try it...just needed something new in my tool box.
However, a drill bit is cheaper and will do just fine.
