To clarify , I have caught at least 1000 gray squirrels here doing ADC work. I'm kinda jealous of those of you that have other types , melinistic, albino, luecistic. So it is super rare to find one here. This is the first melinistic one I have seen , let alone trapped and caught in my area. I guess my area has an odd or shall we say normal genetic makeup of almost no deviant DNA to cause off-color offspring. Kinda more pure blooded or something.
J.Morse , get that piebald one mounted or at least post a pic of it's pelt , I would die for one of those.
I've shared some of my pics with friends who are local. They were just amazed. Most had never seen such a thing. They are unaware that squirrels (or other animals) can have these different color alterations by breakdown of their pigmentation genomes. I had a couple people who were so perplexed they did not recognize the animal and asked if it was a species like fisher or maybe weasel because they never knew that a black (melinistic) squirrel existed.
