What happens if the muskrat or otter is swimming to the side of the trap that the trigger wires are on?

You're going to get some hip caught otter and beaver with triggers like that.

That’s a wives tale...I go a step further and twist the wires together to make one single wire. Still get otters and rats in them. Like’s been mentioned, you will definitely increase the frequency of hip caught otter.

Not the first generation but I have dozens of the ones in Nessie's pic which I long ago quit using when we transitioned to magnums and I didn't like them because I couldn't get the trigger creep out of them anymore, some were really bad. Recently pulled some out because I was running out of gear with how busy the nuisance work got this fall. Following Boco's suggestion I replaced the trigger and dog systems with belisle parts and they work great.

When I am doing a beaver job....I don’t want a 5.00 rat plugging up my traps....avoid ,is the key word here.
