I wouldn't waste my time on another truck. It'll take time to find, time to fix, time to walk home when it breaks down. Not to mention cost to buy, cost repair and cost to insure, cost to license, cost to tow home after it breaks down.

Whats wrong with the truck you got now?
If you don't want to use it why have it?

$500 dollar vechiles turn into $5,000 vechiles real fast.

Think of cost of ownership rather than just purchase price.

$500 won't buy you much of a truck, but it will buy you a lot of repair bills. You'd be better off just to stay with one truck and keep that $500 in the bank.

Don't buy someone else heartaches! A neighbor down the road purchased 2 used vehicles a month ago and they both sit broken down in the lawn.

Why buy a New truck and NOT USE IT

This is $200 and will require the same amount of pushing force as a pickup for <$500

I buy other people's junk quite a bit but only if I can fix them myself. It isn't always enough to know how to fix it though. You had better do your research on parts costs and availability first. You won't get much for $500 most times but they are out there. Craigslist is a good place to start.

I can't tell if you're being facetious but you'd be lucky to get an afternoon out of that rig trapping in our part of the country.

So your going road trapping and your thinking of buying $500.00 truck to do It.. And your targeting $2.00 coon $3.00 mink and $2.rats. Don't do It.

I can't read the word "vehicle" without thinking of the word "vechile" thanks to these threads.

Re: Buy 2nd hand vechile for trapping - 10/25/20 01:41 PM

In order to find a deal you must find something nobody else wants or can fix themselves. I just bought a jeep for.$700 that needed a new rear end. The pinion gear had sheared of so it was undrivable. Guy wanted $1500. I showed up with cash and a trailer. I sold the Jeep I was driving ( that I had $400 into) for $1200. I only have $850 into the new old keep and it is awesome. Probably get an easy $3000 for it. Won't sell it unless I find another good deal. I have a suburban, 2005 with 300'000 miles on it I would sell for $1500. Runs and drives great and toss my camper all season but at. 10 mpg it doesn't cut it on the trap line.

a friend of mine would say any vehicle sitting in a drive way without tags is for sale , go up tot he door and ask , then make and offer.

500 is mighty low for anything you can drive away

my son just bought a 1988 S10 for 300 from a friends dad it had sat 2 years in a field

it didn't come with a drivers door
2 of 4 tires bald
the key was stuck in the ignition in the on position
no head liner
rusted out outside of the bed but the inside looks great as it had a topper on it it's whole life
directional not working
had a switch under the grill to turn off the battery so that it wouldn't run the battery down with the key in the on position
bad battery
and it had about 6 gallons of bad gas in it
washer fluid didn't work

drain the gas and put new gas in did that and got it running before he bought it

45 for a junk yard door
20 for a new key cyclinder
10 for the tool to replace the key cyclinder and fix the directional
65 for a new battery
12 for new spark plugs
10 for tube to preheat the intake air

a bunch of work to clean and fix
tires will be about 80 each mounted and balanced he is

322 with what I could remember there were a few more incidentals like electrical contact cleaner and shop supplies ect

ah and registration is 160 +tax and fees cam out to 210

300 truck
322 parts
210 registration
= 832 for a truck he can drive back and forth to work

I think he got a deal at 300 most people would have probably wanted 500 for that

It’s hard to find a decent used running ATV for $500

I don't think you can find any running and driving truck for $500 these days. Just in the last 5-6 years many things seem to skyrocketed in price. You can't even hardly find used traps for less than 85-95% of new price.

Unless you’re a good mechanic with access to cheap parts from a junkyard and lots of spare time that’s a bad idea.

Exactly, a local dealer has 1988 Chevy 3/4 ton with 60k on the clock. They want 7500 plus tax and title amd whatever other hidden fees. I dont think they understand its a 32 year old truck mileage doesnt matter and its not a classic/hotrod.

This is why you see mobile homes with six vehicles in the front yard that don’t run.

When you buy cheap things, you usually get cheap things.

This is usually true but there are exceptions. A good mechanic can find a broken down car for a couple hundred bucks and knowing it’s a simple fix turn it into a good vehicle.

Example, my dad has been a mechanic his whole life. The car I drove all through high school was one that he traded a set of bronco headlights for because the owner couldn’t get it running. Dad knew what the problem was, got a junkyard part and I drove that car for years.

The only time I bought used vehicles was when I knew the owner and vehicle and knew how it was driven and maintained.

I have a cousin that bought a nice Cadillac from an old gentleman one time. The old fella insisted on seeing my cousins current car to make sure he took care of it - otherwise no deal. That's the kind of guy you want to buy a used car from.

Become a trapping supply dealer and drive $70,000 trucks and $20,000 buggies would be my suggestion.
It's easy. You can ask anybody.

Coonman I feel your pain, but buy the best vehicle you can afford. I have a 2004 dodge and I don't trust it all when I go trapping. It wouldn't bother me as much but my 10 year old goes with me and he is handicapped and not able to walk. I'm not able to buy a new or even a nice used vehicle. So far I haven't had any thing, other than a flat, go out on me when I was out trapping. I have made it home and it broke down as I was pulling in the driveway, knock on wood. a couple of times. Anyway get the best you can afford, its worth the lower blood pressure at the end of the day

Dave, you should try the wheelbarrow idea. Other than basic lubrication and clean up, it should be low maintenance. Maybe you could look for a wheelbarrow with a lifetime warranty.

much easier to find a truck than an ATV here since we made atv legal on all but the state highway it is what people drive all summer

a friend had a Yamaha mule and wore it out on his farm he bought a jeep to replace it for less than the transition fix on the mule

I don't have an issue with buying a used vehicle but I would never buy a used one for trapping. I have a dedicated truck for trapping and it is never used for anything else ever...never been on a grocery run...only had one passenger in it ever-my grandson once...took the passenger seat out the day I brought it home...leave a lot of my gear in it year round as it is in storage 10 months a year. The only thing it has ever been used for was longlining mink and canines...kinda like having a new vehicle every year for trapping.

This is the perfect car, no one will have a clue what you are up to. Well, maybe they will have an idea, but they will be wrong.

Send that $500 to the IRS to reduce your penalty and interest. May save you more than you make trapping.
