Cattle Diseases

A friend in the Philippines has some cattle (Brahman) one quit eating and started foaming at the mouth, was running around crazy like in the hot sun and died. Sounds a lot like rabies. Now there is another one that wont eat.

They did shoot what appeared to be a rabid dog on the property a few months back.

Is there any other disease it might be ? Hoof and mouth don't do that right.

Maybe poison of some sort perhaps.

My guess is rabies

A calf running a high temp from a respiratory infection will act similar to rabies. When there body temp goes 106-108 they are very irritable and will shake, foam at the mouth, and charge just about anything. That was my first guess before I read about the dog. Without being there to see how they are acting it’s hard to say. Mycoplasma bacteria, BRD (kinda generic name theses days for lots of cattle sickness) or a number of other viruses (BVD, IBR, etc...) that attack the body and then lead to pneumonia could be the culprit. All move fast through the herd including rabies so I’d get a vet involved immediately. Good luck and let us know the diagnosis

It could be a respiratory disease. It did have a high temp.

The vet there looked at it and didn't know. Is there a medication for it ? worth a try. not going to help if it is rabies.

The dog could of possibly had distemper too. No diagnosis on that

You could google those symptoms to see if anything else is possible but I'm like the 2 hands above and would assume rabies

There are lots of things that could cause cattle to foam at the mouth. Honestly, rabies would be very low on the list, but not impossible. Most likely some sort of respiratory disease, the vet should do a necropsy if not too late. The other one needs examined and treated before it dies too.

With the number of rabies cases the Philippines has annually I would think it is highly possible that is what it is.

Tell your freind to present it with water(or any liquid).If it gets panicky at the sight and smell of the water it is likely hydrophobic(has rabies)

Do you know why that is, Boco? Apparently that is a common response?

stuff like this gets my intrest and reminds me of a funny encounter I had once. A woman came to my house years ago saying something about tuna and saving dolphins and I told her I could care less about the dolphins but if something is endangering the cows let me know.

It is related to the inability to swallow in the later stages of the disease.

I asked that. It wouldn't eat but did drink.

I told them to isolate it and not share any drinking or feed pails with the others. They buried the first one.

With 200-300 people die from rabies in that country every year, mainly from dog bites, but a lot of the islands or Provinces are rabid free because of the dog rabies vaccinations .

First thing we took in our Rabies course ,when coming into a HOT ZONE; ASK if they are from one of those countries; India, Pakistan, Iran , Iraqi, or have travelled there, if you see a Cross with the Lord, they believe in vacinations. Other sects do skirt the edges

Foaming at mouth does not always mean rabies. More often than not, it's not rabies at all, but for whatever reason people just think rabies is the only ailment that causes the "foaming at the mouth". If it was drinking, it wasn't rabies. Many respiratory diseases like BRD and pneumonia in cattle cause "foaming" because of heavy mouth breathing. Again, the vet needs to check it and treat it before it dies too. The rest of the herd probably needs checked too.
