Oregon chain, Stihl chain, Husqvarna chain?

Oregon chain, Stihl chain, Husqvarna chain? - 11/01/20 01:27 AM

So I have a fairly new Husqvana chain for my 20" Husky saw and it seems to be crap.
I have a Stihl saw with Stihl chain that seems to be very good chain.
I also have the option of Oregon chain.
What brand chain do y'all lean towards?
I'm cutting dead ash that's harder than the hubs of you know what.

I like the Stihl. The Oregon seems like it is softer steel. Might not be but seems like it

Might be that it is just a different profile. That makes a big difference in cutting performance. What makes it crap? Hard to file, dull quicker, doesn't cut as fast, stretches out quicker?

I buy mostly woodland pro

this is what I use https://www.baileysonline.com/woodlandpro-38rc-3-8-x-058-chisel-chainsaw-chain-wpp-38rc.html

I think it is re-branded Carlton chain

my saw shop guy was explaining one brand sharpens then hardens and the other brand hardens then sharpens

I can't remember which Carlton/woodland pro vs Oregon

Chisel or semi-chisel the low kick back safety chain doesn't cut well I don't buy any of it

any way his feeling was that it one might get a little more time on the original edge but by the 2nd sharpening it doesn't make much of a difference

The Husky chain has stretched badly.
I bought a Stihl chain tonight with the same # of teeth but it won't fit the Husky bar. So much for that idea..
I'll check the Oregon chain out tomorrow.

I like the Stihl. I cut a lot of firewood and it seems to perform best.

I like the stihl all the way around. JMO

Don't count the number of teeth. Count the number of drive links

gauge , pitch and number of drive links matter this should be printed near the mounts on your bar you need to match all of it

gauge is the thickness of the drive link common ones are .050 .058 and 0.063 most stihl chain is .063

most husky saws are factory .050 or .058

pitch is the distance between the rivets 1/4 3/8low pro .325 3/8 .404 are the common

You must need a blue pill if you think ash (of any ripeness) is hard! I use mostly Oregon chain, and it does just fine on our hedge. I do run multiple chains though, if they start cutting hard, they get changed...I sharpen my own btw.

I run all Stihl chains but make sure you have the yellow Tie Strap on the chain when purchasing. The green Tie strap is for low kickback (their safety chain)… in my opinion, it has poorer chip removal and performance.

My husqvarna 455 rancher with x cut chain will flat out cut my dads 029 stihl with his stihl chain. Goes longer between fill ups also.

Not sure what you mean by a x cut chain but a 455 Rancher is exactly the saw I'm working with here. It has been a good saw for the big stuff.

Gary, go on Comstock's web page or give them a call to get the correct chain. They have specials on 5 and 10 packs.

x-cut is huskies newest label.
There's more to this than brand name.
How are the depth gauges?
Should be 25/1000s.
Can be checked with a cheap gauge or a feelers gauge.
Like your skinning knife,
touched up often is happier.
I like semi for anything with dirt involved.

We’ve used Husqvarna chain for the last 8-10 years with no problems, used Oregon for about 20 years before that. Cut mostly hardwood

I would bet that a lot of the different brands are manufactured by the same people.

The 3/8 pitch. 72 Drive links and 050 gauge are the important numbers. Then you have to decide if your saw will be able to pull a full comp chain or in harder wood you may be better off running a half or full skip tooth chain. If a full comp one may bog the saw down. Semi chisel chain will not cut as aggressive as a full chisel chain but will keep its edge longer. If you buy Stihl chain with a green tie strap all bets are off. Those do not cut well whatever you do with them. I bought one once by mistake and can't type the technical terms I used trying to work with it on here without getting a holiday.

33RS3-72 is that the chain you have

I have the 455 in a red case Jonsered 2255 my bar is .058

yes .050 3/8 72dl is what I get from your bar

by the way if you don't need the 20 inch for the size of the wood the 18 inch bar and chain on that saw will cut even faster the 18 can hardly slow the rpm down

x-cut is a full chisel design to cut fast https://www.husqvarna.com/au/parts-accessories/chains/x-cut-c85/581626601/

x-cut does not appear to come in .050 only .058 and .063 which are the considered professional gauge

not sure that you are but if you compare a sharp full chisel chain to a safety chain it will generally cut much faster.

also when you sharpen clean out the gullet and not just get the top plate sharp , the gullet is the space for the chip to be carried out

the RM type chains from stihl are the low kick back green link , or green tie strap or green on the box
