youth model marlin 336? - 11/05/20 04:37 PM

Here is some guns I got from my Dad today. He's getting old and has to move to where he can't take it all with him.

On the top is a 336 in 30-30 mfg date of '68. Very nice shape.
On the bottom is a much smaller 336, youth model? grin

I'm sure you don't have one just like it.

The barrel length is approx 14"
Here is a picture side by side to show how much smaller it is.

1903 action is it a 1903A3 ? does it have the slot for the peep sight in the rear

that looks like the military front sight and a turned down barrel

looking at the proportions to the 336 with 20 inch barrel 1968 it would seem to have to be a shorter cartridge using the same a similar extractor , the loading gate also looks to short , maybe a 32-20?

I have a pile of 03 Sporter stocks if you need one to put that barreled action in.

What is stamped on the left side of the barrel of the smaller rifle? I am a big fan of Marlin rifles and I have never seen anything like that!

You might want to delete this until you've cross referenced the NFA on SBRs.
If you already have and are good then please disregard.

Is that Shorty the Trapper model? Or did Winchester make the Trapper?

Re: youth model marlin 336? - 11/05/20 08:36 PM

Winchester trappers are short rifles.

IE, short barrel(usually octagon but can be round) less than 20", nose cap (no barrel band), rifle or shotgun butt plate, rifle sights

20" with the above features were just short rifles

Marlin used baby to describe many of their short rifle/carbines.

But it gets confusing when you understand winchester, and marlin to a much lesser degree, would readily build you whatever you asked for. For this reason there many examples of doesn't fit categories exactly.

I have an action that you could put into your stock!!
I'm going to sell it once I know what it is exactly.

I doubt I'd get into any trouble with this.

Probably shouldn't say that you never know nowdays.

As to all the questions about the smaller rifle.

now maybe you can tell what it is.
It is a model of 336 my Dad made at least 50 years ago. Its all wood, everything was carved from scratch.
It's now one of my most treasured guns.

It doesn't have a slot in the rear. It does have a raised dovetail area with notches stamped on the top of it. I assume its for the rear sight, if it was a peep, I don't know.
here is a picture of the rear area.

and the stamping on the barrel.
