120 sets in today
115 raccoon sets. Five canine sets. Anyone want to venture a guess on tomorrow’s catch? It will be warm tonight, not ideal conditions.
And no, there are any prizes. It’s hard to fund when coons are worth a buck apiece :-)

Is fur prime up there yet? Lot of work only to get it cut half price (1.00 to .50 cents lol)total 37.53 cents after commissions.

It’s the same as it always is this time of year, not quite peak primeness but also two weeks from being shut down by snow potentially.
That’s the stuff dreams are made of, but highly unlikely

Skin, skin, skin all week while I’m off work and running hard, then put them up later this season.

Last time I got that many sets out on opening day ( which was a long time ago). I had 28 coons and 43 possums that next day. 43 possums in a Jeep Wrangler is not a pretty smell. I had pre-baited conibear boxes and really had the possums coming in. Lol

Best I ever did was about 75 sets in a day. Those DPs are cheating, lol.
I'm gonna go with 24 coon and about a dozen possums.

Only took me 8 hours to run out of traps... they’re slick. I’d rather have 120 pocket sets, but that’s not happening in a day, or at all with the low water levels.

Not familiar with PA coon population but if you put that many sets out here 50 to 60 coon would be expected.

Our corn is still standing...don't know if they are gonna be water animals for awhile.

I’m far from a professional, but 30% is the best ratio I’ve ever had on more than a few traps.I would love to trap in that kind of population though.

Punched in 25 more sets today on new ground. Plan to keep doing that every day- keep rolling old sets into new ground.

Is it pathetic to say I would be thrilled with that average this year?

It's like the real trappers always post on here, "You can't sell them for $2.50 each, if you don't catch them."

Re: 120 sets in today - 11/08/20 06:17 AM
Who cares how many..... You get 1000.00 worth of therapy every day you are out there so if that isn't enough from 1-100 coons,,, then maybe we all should switch to something else.. the mike
Slower yet today, but here’s 14 dry, fluffy coons for the day. Hoping a front comes through early next week to get stuff moving... it’s way too hot out.

Pretty Coons.. I've been getting some of those almost black ones too.
Nice looking color , not any yellow buses.
This time of year, I’m usually fortunate to get dark, silver colored coon if I stay largely away from the water.

Good catch, keep after'm!
Slow again, but steady. I think I caught the biggest coon I’ve ever trapped today. No scale, but he was over 25 lbs based on weighing lots of others in the low 20 range. Overall, good day in the field. 18 old sets pulled and rolled into the next leg of my line. Still waiting for a night of good movement.
Thanks for enjoying this with me all.

I can only hope for that color, wow they look very nice color wise. Are they graded Eastern? I have more brownish, reddish and the darn yellow in many of my coons.

Yes, I always get graded Eastern. And usually, at least when I shipped to NAFA, the color was always graded as a 2-3.

Those are some awesome lookin' coons!
Slowest day yet, even with new property set last night. Low of 60 degrees and rain most of today slowed stuff down I think. Cool front has finally arrived this afternoon though and I’m counting on a good run tonight to get me to my goal this week. Thanks for looking.
keep going

I’ll try to remember to do that. Today was check #5, though I’m pulling and moving sets to new areas constantly to stay fresh. Check 1= 19 coon. Check 2=14. Check 3=12. Check 4= 12 again. Check 5 (today) dropped to 9. I’m hoping for 15+ tomorrow.
For anyone interested in stats, I’m running about a 10% catch ratio, which is average for me but much lower than last season on largely the same ground. I’m using mostly duke dps with dry dog food with a squirt of fish oil/smoke. Most sets are on trails from timber to corn, but I have a mix of water in there too.

Eight I think. No, not to my knowledge.
Real slow day again. Still thankful to be out in the woods. Winding down this line and prepping for another line I can check before work next week. Sitting at 88 for the season so far.

Looking back through this, I was mistaken. I’m usually graded north-central.

5 more coon and another skunk to wrap up the week. Everything is pulled and a new, much smaller line has been set up for checking before work next week. Thanks for following along. I ended the week with 93 coon as of this morning. No canines disappointingly, but it was a decent week considering the warmer temps.

I read through your posts and I believe you said you were setting trails between the woods and corn. Did you make any trail sets? I found trail sets to be very productive in that situation. Trail sets take advantage of what the animal is already doing.
Congrats on your catches. Nice color.
great week i would say , :)thanks for taking us along, keep going and good luck this week

I made exactly 2 blind sets, which didn’t connect. I’ve never mastered the technique, though I think they are useful. DPs are just so much faster

Re: 120 sets in today - 11/15/20 03:01 PM
That's an impressive catch for a week. Very nice!
Above you mentioned you stats, I'm just curious, how many miles did you put on your truck? I guess your sets in the woods you had them wired off to the sapplings or whatever was handy. A railroad tie plate would work good for that too.
Honestly, I've never used DP's. I've looked them over and played with them lots of times, but I was usually just dirt trapping. Plus water sets and all, with foot traps or bodygrips and snares.
I scouted a farm the other day, I've trapped it before, according to the tracks there are a pile of coon on the place. I'd love to set the place up, but there are about 50 head of cattle in the pasture between the corn and the river yet.. The cows followed me around the fence line the other day. And that new electric fence is tough, can't even find a spot high enough to crawl under. Guess I'll need to break down and get some dps.

I put on about 70 miles a day on the truck, and walked another 6-7 (in spurts obviously). I’m not fortunate enough to have a lot of culverts to trap, so most locations require a couple hundred yards walk- up to a half mile- to get to the good areas. Because of this, and the terrain, I use cables a lot, and stake the rest with an 18-24” rebar stake. I’m usually carrying traps, bait, and maybe a hammer/stakes. Everything else stays in the truck...
