Not intimately acquainted with them but I think it's a Winchester and I'd love to get my hands on one.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/06/20 10:49 PM

Could it be 1906 Winchester? Only they're supposed to have round barrel. This is hexagon.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/06/20 11:14 PM

It's listed as a 1906 but maybe had a left-over barrel from an 1890 put on it? Or two guns pieced together. I'm just really curious.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/06/20 11:31 PM

The 06 had a flat butt plate.
The 90 is just like the one in the pic

Re: What gun is this? - 11/06/20 11:34 PM

I have a model 1906 Winchester rifle. It was the first rifle I had. I purchased it for $10 from a neighbor in Pratt, Kansas in1952 . It was well used when I purchased it. One thing that I like about it is that the tube can be loaded with shorts, longs, and long rifle cartridges. I have no idea of how many bricks of shells I shot out of it. Shells were very cheap back then.

Thanks for the replies. I think I need this gun. I don't have quite enough yet.

Mine is a .22 short, but yes, Win did produced other .22 cals. in that model.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/07/20 12:27 AM

If it's a .22 WRF in good shape, figure on spending $1500 for it. Dad bought his during the depression for $15.00. It has made more meat than most center fire rifles , and it's an absolute tack driver smile

I had a new 1906 but sold it so no photographs available, except this one I found online. Mine looked like this:

The Winchester Model 1906 was designed as a more inexpensive companion to the popular Model 1890, the main differences being the 1906's flat shotgun-style butt plate and rounded barrel, as opposed to the 1890s crescent butt plate and octagon barrel.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/07/20 03:17 PM

I have that exact rifle. As has already been mentioned above, it is a Winchester Model 1890 pump 22 rimfire rifle. They were offered in various 22 rimfire calibers, including 22 Special, 22 LR, 22 Short. I have a 22 LR model and it is a beautiful rifle.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/07/20 08:23 PM

Chas from Dawson County is correct. It was advertised as a 1906 and tagged as a 1906 and sold as a 1906 but it is indeed an 1890 in excellent condition. Built between 1907-1910 by the serial number. She followed me home for $550. I don't think I got hurt a bit.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/07/20 08:52 PM

It's an 1890 Winchester. I bought one at a show in Ohio over 50 years ago for $40.00

A friend of mine lent me the money to buy firearms at that show and he got his pick of what I bought first.
He took the 1890 Winchester, caliber WRF. He passed away 3 years ago and someone in his family sold it for $800.

The show was at Hara Arena in Dayton -- Largest gun show I ever went to, spent $600 on firearms that day.
I missed the deal of the day, a guy opened up a crate of German Luger's and was selling them for $39.00 in the grease --
I was out of money.

This gun was my grampa's. Serial number shows it was built in 1946. The gun sat by the back door to protect chickens with, or anything else that required a firearm like steer, hog, or lamb butchering. My dad did the same thing with it. This rifle is a 62A model but all these style "gallery" guns are pretty similar. The 1890 i s the only one with the octagon barrel I THINK.

The Winchester Model 1890 usually starts at $1000. You did very well.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/07/20 11:59 PM

Danny,

The Remington model 12's had octagon barrels in the higher trim levels. They came all the way form plain Jane to fully engraved.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/08/20 12:00 AM

split away. octagon is a pretty common word for those barrels even though it isnt accurate

Re: What gun is this? - 11/08/20 12:01 AM

i should have said the only winchester gallery guns that had hexagon barrels. i thought that would be understood

Re: What gun is this? - 11/08/20 12:04 AM

My late father in law had an old Remington pump with the hex/oct barrel. One of his stupid sons got ahold of it and sold it for a song. Arg.

First gun I ever shot in my life was this gun. My father bought it for 11 dollars from my grandpa in 1964.

He also had one that had a octagon barrel the same model but the rifling was shot out and you couldn't hit a car with it so he sold it for 20 bucks .

That is very well preserved!

Re: What gun is this? - 11/08/20 04:11 AM

GREAT THREAD!
The true gallery guns are chambered in only .22 Short and have a triangular loading port, instead of a cartridge shaped one. That's so the "Carnie" could load the cartridges from a pre-filled tube.

Model 62 & 62A's were the most common Winchester models that were Gallery guns, and if there was Winchester stamped on the side of the receiver....Well $$$$.$$.
1890 and 90 Gallery guns are super rare.
Some gallery guns had an attachment to the front of the loading tube for a chain fastener, that attached to the gallery counter top. Add another $$$.$$!

Re: What gun is this? - 11/08/20 04:16 AM

Here's what the loading port looks like.

One little known fact about this model is it may be the fastest firing weapon made that is not labeled fully automatic. If you hold the trigger down it will fire as fast as you can work the slide. Each time it closes it will fire !!! No need to pull the trigger each time.

Dad's Model 97 12 ga is slam fire. It's a wonder my Brother and I aren't both dead.

Re: What gun is this? - 11/08/20 12:25 PM

I never tried slam firing that old 22. Just never entered my mind. When I was a kid learning to shoot it was always about one accurate shot. Probably left over from great great grampa and muzzleloaders. It is the way I taught my kids and grandkids too. I own a 10/22 and a couple big mags for it. Has been a few years but I have played with them some. Gotta let the kid in me out once in a while. Buddy tells me all the time "dont let the old man in" . Getting harder to do every year.
