It should work with any ferrous metal and possibly other types of metal. You should be able to use harder rocks to beat the metal between too. Dampness should be less of a then when trying to catch a spark from flint and steel.

Yep I have seen this method before. This is how blacksmiths used to start their forge for the day before lighters and propane.

"And it's a lot harder than it looks actually."

I thought it looked plenty hard. LOL

Yeah, you wouldn't need a fire after all that!

Well if that works.
Then a 4 inch stainless steel screw ran in and out of fresh pressure treated 4×4 should work too.
Say a dozen times or so.

I'm tired and lazy I guess, so I think I would just have to wait and watch for a lightning strike in my Quest for Fire, lol.

the tin with flint , steel and charcloth and tinder might fit better

I do keep a mallet in my bag but it's a flint hammer to get a fresh edge on the go

A cigarette lighter is #1. A fuel tablet and a lighter works very well and is small to store/carry.

If three bic lighters fail you, your luck ran out long before you needed fire.

And people say butane doesn't work in the cold. Sure, but if you are alive you can warm it just fine

There are two in each of my day packs along with cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly.

I wasn't a boy scout but I recollect one telling me steel wool was good to get it going?

You'll need an anvil too.

I suspect almost all of us carry a hammer and stakes or at least wire, when trapping. Rocks should work for the anvil and as the hammer, in a pinch. A hatchet would work as the hammer too. Wire and stakes could both be heated up by pounding.

Best thing to light an emergency fire is waxed fusees-burn hot for 10 minutes and you can get a quick fire going without kindling.
I always carry some in the truck and on the snowmachine and bike.

Magnifying glass if you don't have a flame is much easier.
