If you don't have a Gulo Knife...

If you don't have a Gulo Knife... - 11/14/20 03:06 AM

You definitely need to. I picked up a couple of very nice fur knives from Jack (Gulo on here). I can tell a lot went into the craftsmanship of these knives. They feel excellent in the hand. Smooth wooden handles that fit my hands perfectly and razor sharp blades on both of them. I was in need of some quality skinning/pelting knives and these are perfect. Figure they'll be in my fur shed for the rest of my trapping days. For some reason, I have tried to upload pics and Imgur is not treating me well tonight. I'll upload if they ever get onto Imgur and I can transfer them. Hope everyone is having success this year. Tight chains.

Yes sir, WI , Jack's knives are works of art and do the job to perfection. In multi usage subjects too. I have found I can use them to make perfect whiskers in using the point as scrimshaw tools, whisking away outer layers of colour down to the white base , making amazing whiskers when they need to be white.

For precision work in just about anything, I have them at arms length all the time in my office. Beautiful useful art. Made from an artist, for artists , in many talents.

Got 2 of his beaver knives. Excellent job on making them. They are almost to nice to use.... but I bought them to use and they work. I'm pretty hard on stuff but these couple beauties are holding up just fine. Highly recommend.

Everyone that's chimed in, many, many thanks...

I try for a product that's utilitarian. I became disappointed a couple years ago with the commercial pelters and just wanted something that would be comfortable, hold an edge, and not "egg-out" after 2 months of everyday use. I experimented with many different steels, and finally found what I liked. They (for me, especially the pelter) get daily workouts, and I'm generally happy with the way they work for me and the way they're holding up to abuse.

Again, thanks you all for the kind words. I sincerely hope those knives last you well into the future.

It's my honor, all you Trappers. Many thanks for the kind words and the knife orders. I ran a short red fox snare line this morning, and only brought home one fox, thus I didn't lose too much money, and probably made about 6 cents today on fur. (Counting my gas money, I probably only lost about $10). I can lose at least that much on knives, assuming my time is worth about a nickel an hour. grin

I'm gonna have to get a set of these. I've got a block of eastern black walnut that part of is going into a custom recurve. May have to get the knife handles made to match. Hmmmmm

Gulo, I have a set of bull ivory from my first bull elk I killed a few years ago. Have you ever cut something like that in half and inlayed it into a handle? They are above special to me for reasons I won’t go into on here. Just wondering no big deal if you haven’t done something like that. Thanks

Re: If you don't have a Gulo Knife... - 11/15/20 10:55 AM

Again, many, many thanks for all the good words and the recent knife orders. It's much appreciated folks.

Pawnee - I've not experimented with inlays into the scales. You've got me thinking, however. I've got a pile of ivories, most from wolf or lion kills that I've picked up over the years. I'll do some experimenting with inlays and epoxy and see what I can come up with. Don't hold your breath, as it may be a while, but I'll keep you informed. I'll not have the time for at least another month, as I'm wasting most of my days trapping, trying my best to lose as much money as I can that way rather than losing it making knives. grin

Re: If you don't have a Gulo Knife... - 11/15/20 01:01 PM

It looks like I may have started a small trend by mentioning that you used wood I sent for my scales. I know you aren't a big fan of that as much of the stuff sent to you is not suitable for scales. Also, because you have scales made in advance, it will take you more time to mill wood sent to you.

In my defense, I did clear mentioning that with you months ago after receiving my knives.

Still, sorry if I caused you extra work.

I hope you don’t mind but their use has been extended well beyond pelting. lol

Re: If you don't have a Gulo Knife... - 11/15/20 01:08 PM

Not a problem at all Lug. Like fur trapping these days, I'm not looking at the knife-building as a "get-rich" endeavor. I enjoy experimenting and working with different woods. As white17 puts it, "Lose money on every knife, but make up the difference with volume". laugh
