“Trappers Special” .22 rifle...updated with pics. - 11/17/20 11:30 PM

I purchased a rifle at a local auction back in the summer and just brought it on the trap line the other day. It’s a single shot bolt action .22, it takes long rifle and shorts. On the barrel is stamped “Trappers Special”, was wondering if anyone had more info or value on it. I believe I found where it was made for F. C. Taylor Fur Co. back in 1928 by mossberg. That’s all the info I have, no #s on it. It’s a great little shooter and have used it on the coyote line already, wish I knew the stories and places that guns been over the years![Linked Image]

That sounds like a neat piece of history. If it still functions that is great too!

The only thing I can find on the gun is . "The 22 Bearcat was actually made by Mossberg for Century Arms. Mossberg referred to their version as the model B. It was Mossbergs first bolt action rifle. They were made from 1928-1932. In 1928 it was stamped " Trappers Special" The Mossberg Model B also marked the beginning of Mossbeg firearms without serial numbers. It was orginal designed for F. C. Taylor Fur Co. of St Louis Mo, a mail order house that sold these for $4.85. It then was released to many retailers. It is a basic single shot take-down bolt action rifle."

This has been a very light weight and fun/accurate rifle to have on the trap line. I will more than likely retire it after this season.

Very Awesome...I'd keep using it.

Especially for training kids.

I have "a twin" that was my great grandfathers. It has "premier single shot" stamped on barrel. He stored it in the milk house. It took me a long while to refinish the stock and blue the barrel during my senior year of HS. It doesn't leave the safe.

That rifle looks a lot like my old Iver Johnson .22.

That's a sweet gun that I'm sure has a ton of stories to tell. I also say keep using it. At least a few more years.

I always remove the butt-plate on the old rifles to see if someone stashed some extra
ammo or something in the stock. Maybe the owners name etc.

Sometimes a roll of dimes or pennies to add a little butt stock weight!

I inherited an old single shot Stevens pistol model 35 from my granddad when I was a boy. According to FFG, it was made in the 1930s. I used it on the trapline for a few years.

I was lucky enough to have my youngest daughter join me this morning for deer hunting and checking traps. I’m 40 and have never trapped a fox or been lucky enough to shoot one. Well this morning I trapped one and let my daughter have the honors with the dispatch. More memories with the “trappers special .22”. Not sure if we will tan it or do a full body mount for her.
