A blood trail Ray Charles could follow. Coughing up massive clots. Bubbly blood.

Trail petered to nothing. Shot looked a bit low.

We tracked it by tracks alone for another 200 yrds, never bedded.

That will make 3 deer not recovered. Ten or twelve pts. Tough to tell

Nowhere else to look now.

One of the nicest deer I've seen. Might have been bigger than my biggest ten pt.

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/21/20 06:36 PM

I hope you can find him. I hate pushing them and I wait as long as possible, and if no sign of blood and I know I hit them well, I back out. The problem here when you push them to soon, they head for rough country and you never have a chance for recovery. Lot different then flat lands.

Here is just a few pictures of my arrowed bucks blood trail yesterday. He traveled over a half mile and was still alive and trying to get up when I finally got to him. It is amazing how much blood this deer lost and had not expired after 3 hours. This trail was like this the whole half mile. Where he was at bedded the blood was massive amounts.

Sounds more like a flesh wound you start with good blood then it peters out. Double lung shots will go 50 yds give or take. High tree stands give poor angles and single lung hits they typically bed within 100 yards though if you kick them up again and they usually start pumping more blood and die. Best thing is 4 hour wait before pursuing

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/21/20 06:37 PM

Hmmm, I don't know the details, but you've still got 3 hours of daylight or better.

If it was me, I'd take my flashlights for the walk back out and stay on it till dark.

You sure the deer you tracked the last 200 yards was the same one? I'd start where you lost blood and circle around a little bit. It's possible he kicked out another deer.

Tough call sitting here 1,000 miles away, I hope you find it. But I'd stay on it till dark anyway.

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/21/20 06:41 PM

Ya snowy , but I always hunt if weather is coming. Gonna snow tomorrow.

Otherwise I'd have looked in the morning.

Blood trail was awesome, with clots the size of a deck of cards every so often. Slowly tapered to nothing.

Probably went two miles after giving him two hrs or so. Didn't find one bed

I was going for heart shot, but might have been a touch low. We figure one blade nicked a lung.

Thnx. Feels pretty bad.

First one i lost was a result of a deflection. 120 yd shot, 30-06.

Hardly a blood trail. Assumed buck made it.

Next was a big six pt. Montec g5 broadhead slammed into shoulder blade and penetrated about an inch.

Found one drop of blood.
Assumed he made it.

This one hurts

Sometimes it takes more than a few hours and a blood trail to find them.

Helped a guy look for a buck one year great blood then pettered out. We looked hard found where he went between 2 bushes and it was like he got carried off by space creatures. It was me the guy i was helping his son and the guys new wife. The kid had to take a leak and walked 10 yards behind us around the bushes we had just pasted even had blood where we were at. That buck had jumpex or when he tipped over ended up behind that bush back the way he'd come from. Just keep looking and good luck.

I have a guy if ever needed whose dogs are 100% on gut shot deer. They’ll either find it dead or bay it up for the hunter to get another shot. You call and tell him the time you shot and he’ll tell you when he’ll be there.
Good luck man. No worse feeling in the outdoors world than losing an animal that may not make it.

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/21/20 07:59 PM

I hope you find him also but sounds like you didn’t hit an artery. Arteries don’t throw clots if the deer is moving. Clots to me are a sign of vein hits( low pumping pressure and clotting). If you can stay on him and push him long enough he might lose enough blood and go down. If he stops and rests it will clot and stop bleeding. He probably live.

Issue is I don't know where to look anymore, no more blood.

Id follow forever if I could. Plus a long shot here with a rifle is 60 yards. I know people who have stepped on dead deer before they saw them

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/21/20 09:21 PM

I sat overlooking a dry flood with my wife last weekend on the last day of rifle and we filled her tag.

Got a fawn at 160 yards. Shot across the dry flood.

I hunt with a guy who has been hunting here for forty years and the longest shot he can recall making or seeing was 180 yards.

18 yards seems like the average

Sounds like the blade just sliced the hide. If it was lungs he would be spraying occasionally as it fills the lungs and he snorts to clear them. That doesn't look like lung blood to me .

The blood in the photo was the first spurt.

The blood trail was one of the best I have followed, and a buddy who killed well over 70 deer was with me. When we started he was confident it was laying dead just over the next rise. Till it started waning...

There was chunks of coagulated blood a few times the size of a deck of cards.

When he stopped you could see two distinct blood marks. As in, two square feet per side.

Sounds like a deep flesh wound in front of the front shoulder. They bleed heavy at first then stop bleeding the further they go.Always bright red blood.

I should have taken pics.

My buddy said lung was 100% hit, and every so often there were bubbles in it

I watched the arrow go, and if I was a betting man I'd say 4" above the bottom of the deer, and 6-8" back from the leg crease.

We figure one blade sliced the bottom of one lung, angle made it miss the second. Entry, exit. Explains it hacking out blood too.

I generally aim too high with a bow, and corrected a bit to much I guess

Here's a thought...next time I'll double lung it and show yall lol

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/22/20 02:07 AM

It absolutely amazes me how tough deer can be. I hit a buck last year that I couldn’t find. Great blood at first with some bubbles, followed a heavy blood trail for 500 yards through thick brush, I even found where he fell off a ridge into a creek. He got back up, kept going, and I followed until there was no more blood. Searched for a couple days, but never found him. You could hit me anywhere with a broad head, and I wouldn’t run 5 feet, much less hundreds of yards lol. They are incredibly tough.

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/22/20 02:22 AM

They are tougher than we think. My cousin shot a big buck with a 30-06. Followed a pouring blood trail with clots like cherries in it for 200 yards. Blood went to drops then nothing. Never found him.

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/22/20 03:26 AM

This is going to sound really nuts but...trust your nose! A few years back my son hit a buck and followed the blood well into the night, till around 1 a.m. Back out at daybreak. Blood petered out completely. We had some idea of which direction he was going so we spread out about 30 yards apart and slowly walked. That's when I told him to "trust your nose'". We went about 100 yards and both of us caught the scent of "buck". Another 20-30 yards into the breeze and he walked up on the buck, down but alive and ready to run. He arrowed it well and we dragged the buck home.

I learned to "trust your nose" from a buddy who arrowed an Elk and found it exactly the same way.

I'll tell you what, I've hunted quite a few species in Africa and Alaska, in addition to Ohio, where I grew up. Whitetail deer are probably the toughest animal I've ever hunted, in terms of being able to take a hit and keep going.

I don't know why that is. A lot of African hunters claim that African game are tougher than game in N. America. I think they're wrong.

Just because there are bubbles in some of the blood does not indicate a lung hit.....pink, frothy blood does.

From what you have described.....a flesh wound.

Then I started training dogs to track in the late '90s. They do in seconds what took me hours.
Dogs have successfully found wounded deer on tracks that were 1,000 yds six days old, six miles (10,000 yds) three days old, etc.

Irresponsible to hunt any big game without having a tracking dog team available.

I walked one down in fairly deep snow, bad shot hit the knee area. Walked and walked and kept it moving and I caught up to it after a few miles. Sometimes you just get lucky and a little persistence never hurts either.

Keep hearing about double lung shot deer having magical powers and going for miles. I have arrows over a hundred white tails and never met one of the magical ones. All my double lung shot down in 50 yards or less, one lung found within 300 yards with 4 hour wait, and liver shot deer found within 200 yards after 4 hour wait. 50% of double lung I have seen go down some only went 10 yards stood and looked and went down. The magical double lung shots and went miles is bs.

Re: Arrow away. Its been an hour... - 11/22/20 04:05 PM

The biggest problem up here is if you wait overnight the coyotes will get to them before you do. The coyotes have no problem following up on wounded deer, well hit or not. I won't bow hunt unless there is good snow on the ground. Good luck.

I think pronghorns, pound for pound, are tougher than white-tails. Sure, they get planted with a decent shot just as fast, but if you just clip one, good luck in keeping up.
