Gonna try with 1 1/2 cs and 110 Connies. Anyone have opinions on the subject?
1 1/2 will outperform 110 connies on a float any day. That's been my experience anyways.

old no 2 sq jaw victor with weak springs is my favorite
I didn't have much luck with floats, could pick up a few rats but overall was not impressed. I used 1.5s, pretty easy to drown them off of a float with a 1.5 from my experience.
also catch mink on floats with muskrat lure

Leg holds will out preform BG's every time.

low percentage set until spring breeding time.
I own one float. First week I had it set, I caught a rat the first four checks. Works great if theirs alot of open water. I set it about 20 yards from the edge of the cattails. I grab some mud/cattail debris from the shore and place it on the float. It gives the muskrat an inviting spot to stop aways from shore and chew on their food.

I had 2 floats in place for 5 days. I never had a snapped trap. I moved them about 100 yards and went 4/4 3 days in a row. In the right place they rock.

I have never had much luck with floats -- but then I have to build mine nutria proof (still looking for a good design) . I am sure they are productive in the right circumstances just not smart enough to make them work in mine.

Floats work much better in the springtime with footholds rather then fall time.

1.5's
and I had better results with stools as opposed to floats.

For me, I haven't had great success with floats and they tend to get bulky to throw in the canoe or Jon boat. I use Sudden Valley Rat Clip Poles for most of my open water sets, when I did use floats I had a higher catch rate in the spring.

Used ear corn as bait and footholds. Rig to hold beaver as they like ear corn as well in Illinois anyway.

Floats don't work for me until spring. And I like to keep them In close to cover. In my opinion rats don't like to be exposed out In open water.
But stools will out preform floats hands down where I trap. But then again It's a spring thing.
