Pictures Added/ Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/25/20 09:31 PM

I Believe I'll have some Beaver in the AM: This is one of the Slickest mudded Lodges I've ever trapped.

I'd say its going to be a cold winter....but so far its been extremely warm.

6 sets.

I was on the way to a private landowner property to set so I only set 6.

I'll be out there in the AM:

I guess it depends on your goals. You could make just a couple sets well away from the lodge, likely get the big ones, leave the junior stock.

Working a job...they want them gone.

However its a Pond ... Right next to a River system so the Beaver will always move back in.

May I ask what the reasoning is behind that rule?

Ya, that sounds like a well thought out law... I can see no firearms, but can you set in the dark? If I couldnt trap in the dark I couldnt trap.

I bet you are emptying traps right now. You got your knife sharp?

I don't think they need any reasoning for their trapping rules in Minnesota. Its just a table load of DNR folks sitting around, shooting their thoughts, and writing down regs. Now, they probably have to have diversity philosophies written into them, such as "transgender Hmong humans get to trap for free" grin. Got to love how the PRMN runs things...

Have fun 330 Trapper!!!

I just found out the city workers had been shooting there Before they called me in.

So now its a Crap shoot....really ticks me off
Posted By: fossil2

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 04:41 PM

too bad about the shooters. did they say how many they killed? trapping hours used to be 6 to 6, then it was extended to 5 a.m. to 10 p,m. 17 hours a day is enough for me. most public land here closes at 10 p.m., so im guessing thats the reason for trapping hours ending then.
Posted By: 330-Trapper

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 05:19 PM

NO a lot of times they won't tell me how many day shot or their different shooters on the city crew and they seem to do take pot shotsKnow a lot of times they won't tell me how many day shot or their different shooters on the city crew and they seem to take pot shots.

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 05:55 PM

Can't trap after 10? I bet that gets a lot of enforcement. Does that mean you can't "set" any traps but you can check? If your in the country after 10 pm and have a trapping license are you automatically guilty?
There is no shortage of stupidity where democrats congregate!

Public land closes?? Shouldn't you call that "King's Land" or something then?

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 06:15 PM

Do you get paid by the beaver? Employed road crew members would never be carrying firearms or be permitted to shoot guns while working due to liability reasons here but I get that happening by nearby or affected property owners occasionally. I discourage it because it cuts directly into the profit/income being paid by the beaver.
Posted By: fossil2

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 06:35 PM

personally ive never heard of road crews carrying guns, and im sure thats illegal. usually the county/township/state hires an adc person to get rid of problem beavers, and theyre allowed to shoot if trapping doesnt get the job done.

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 06:42 PM

Well fossil, the city crew does here, sanctioned or not. The manager told me last year after I had set up .

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 06:52 PM

When I did nuisance beaver work on the RR my authorization from the MNR was to trap and shoot. Each was a separate authorization.
On top of that I had to have a letter each year from the chief engineer MofW from the RR authorizing carrying a gun on RR property.
Employees acting as agents for the company can get these authorizations in Ontario.
I was/am always armed.

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 06:57 PM

thats interesting, but like you said, probably not sanctioned. what city, if you dont mind me asking.

Re: Well Mudded Lodge ...Slick - 11/26/20 07:06 PM

It was a great job 330,but a tough job-hard work-had to remove all dams and return water to natural flow.Pay was great, lots of overtime and my own boss.
As long as beavers were getting whacked and the water lowered I never heard from my boss.Worked directly with track inspectors who would report problem areas.(emergencys).
Also did a lot of inland work identified thru twice a year aerial surveys i did with a contracted helecopter service, sometimes a mile or more from the railroad thru the bush often in remote areas and in bug season.
Needed to carry a gun for whacking beaver as well as protection from bears in some areas.

There might be Boco , this is in a city park pond.

Over a foot path there is a beaten path ...the beaver use to go to a river . I set both sides of that chanel with 280's under and dive stick. I have to be as Incognito as I can be because of the dog walkers etc.

On the river side this morning were two green willow branches fresh cut by beaver . Like they were coming IN and got to the still open water chanel and didn't want to dive with them. I set a 330 a bit further out , still a dive set. Usually I would not make all the traps totally under. But people you know.

If we had Ice around the feed pile I'd make 3 or 4 different sets.

This was off the mud slicked house, a slide Where I had a Snare.

The LG. Beaver hit the Snare, took it down the bottom of the 10' re rod . Pulled out the bottom end of the dive rod and was very live and up on shore waiting for me.

Next time if water opens, I use a shorter cable, that was the problem. Too much leverage.

The fun was finding the dropped willow sticks at the entrance coming from the river. I had the two ends of the channel covered with 2 - 280 Belisles. But I believe the Big fat head beaver dropped the fresh cut sticks and went overland from river to the pond.
So yesterday I added a 330 3' further out with very light blocking.
Nailed it today! Hope there's more [Linked Image]

Logan and I walked (carefully) on the ice today and made a couple beaver sets. Hopefully between them, a few otter sets and a couple of fox sets something connects tomorrow.
