Looks like a moose, deer and a caribou had a hand in siring that one.

Patten? I've hunted Island Falls quite a bit in the past. I've canoed and kayaked into some nice area down that way.

There are some monsters up here if you can manage to cross paths with them.

That’s awesome! I found my first non-typical this season but couldn’t seal the deal. It was nowhere near that big....just average 8 with a few drop tines. Is that genetics that cause that platting look, and can be passed down, or more like a one time thing? One day.....

I’ve hunted up that way in Oxbow. Really wild country. Heard two bucks fighting and tried to sneak in on them and almost stepped on a doe and she blew and bolted. The u is ran off . I found a chunk of hide about 1 1/2” round and the place had fur all over and everything was broke up for about twenty feet. They were hammering each other.

I'd take that any day over a big typical. Very cool rack.

Cool rack!! I think forest white-tail get more of those funky racks than open country farmland ones. I've never seen a major palmated tine(s) on a white-tail in South Dakota. I'm not saying they don't happen, I just think such anomalies are rarer here.

Not to change the subject, but has anyone else ever noticed that when a person from the eastern side of the Country refers to how far away something is they usually refer to the number of minutes away it is; in this case the buck was taken "20 minutes from where I live".
Whereas in the western part of the Country people refer to how far away a deer was shot in miles; like "The deer was shot 20 miles from where I live".
Just interesting imo; I wonder why?
Really nice buck btw, I love odd antlers.

My stepson was after that one himself.
So was this a well known local buck that boys had been after for a couple years or did it just pop up this year?

Well known by some hunters for a couple of years I just found out this morning.People were night hunting and everything to get him.He was finally legally shot while chasing a doe.

grumley701- There goes my theory of farmland vs forest white-tails!
waggler-You are correct, generally there is a difference in how people measure distance, often based on density of the population and the amount of straight roads, both which affect typically how fast people can go. A mile doesn't really mean a lot in much of the East because nothing was really measured in that length. You get to the areas of the country settled with the Township and Range land survey system (Northwest Ordinance Act), the land is measured in miles and in a lot of places where that land survey was used, there was a road every mile. So its easy to "count" miles compared to the old English "Metes and Bounds" surveying of the East Coast states. A speed of 60 mph is also a mile a minute so people who often use distance instead of time can change miles into time more easily than people who try to convert time into miles. In my own usage, if I'm driving around my metro, I speak of time, if I'm driving across my state, I measure things in miles and convert to time if needed. Or, at least that's my theory.

Yep, agree with you on that, except along much of the lower James River where the Hutterites have cleared most of the bottomland "forest" in many palces...
