Original Thanksgiving pumpkin pie

Original Thanksgiving pumpkin pie - 11/26/20 06:58 PM

I wanted to try a pumpkin "pie" the way the pilgrims made it.

It was really a custard baked on an open fire within a hollowed out pumpkin, or squash

Unfortunately, the only pumpkin I could find had a rotten spot and would no hold the liquid.

Rather than give up, I decided to improvise. I cut up the sound portions into wedges and arranged them into a casserole dish jigsaw puzzle style and poured the custard mixture over it. It didn't exactly result in what I was hoping for. Oh, well, presentation sucks, but, still might be some good eating.

Here it is cooling off.

A couple hours after the meal I cut it open and served it along with a cup of spiked eggnog.

The good news is it did taste great.

The bad news is it settled into a layer of custard, a layer of pumpkin, and a layer of custard. I was going to take an other photo, but, was afraid of breaking my camera.

May I suggest serving copious amounts of wine with dinner first. wink

The recipe sounded good to me.

If I only followed the recipe exactly it would have been great.

The next time when it says "whole pumpkin" I won't substitute "segmented rotten pumpkin".
