Nightlatching (detailed video) - 12/02/20 12:07 AM

I made a video on how I nightlatch traps and the benefits of it. Hope it helps answer some trapper’s questions.

Good tutorial.
One thing I'd add is, the dog should get a few strokes also to square them up.

Yes, the end of the dog should be filed so it is smooth on top.

I file the end on a slight undercut angle...barely noticeable.

Can you make a video detailing how to get the pan to sit flat? This is my first year trapping and I’m struggling to get my pans flat without being to low.

Tackman, bend the vertical part of the frame where the dog attaches with a heavy pliers or vice grip. Bend it forward to lower the pan and away from the trap to raise the pan. Sometimes takes three or four tries to get it nice and level.

They make a special tool for bending that part of the fame too, available at trapping supply houses. I've never found it necessary though, a heavy pliers works good.

I grab that part of the frame on either side of the dog and give equal bends to keep it straight.

Don't forget to close the dog loop a bit. Not doing it will give you grief also. lots more problems than an imaginary "false drop" as Hal Sullivan calls it.

You want the dog to move up and down with no back and forth movement. That back and forth movement is where the "false drop" fantasy comes from.
