Age to start - 12/04/20 01:33 PM

My nephew will be 3 in June. He already done a few deer hunts with my brother and me . we successfully took a yearling.. And he shows a lot of interest in the critters I catch. At what age would you guys start taking a toddler for ride along on trapping? Pic of him admiring my catch, us three on a deer hunt , and him and his dad with the deer we got on that hunt

#1 thing with little kids is don't let them get cold, or hungry,or thirsty or sleepy and have to stay awake. Don't expect them to sit still and quiet. Make sure they are having fun. My 8 y/o grandson killed his first deer this year. We put in the range time, played a game where he had to put his finger on the spot where a bullet would go with deer pictures. We sat in a blind, with warm clothes on and the temperature was about 45 or so.

Getting cold hungry tired thirsty or constantly being told to sit still and be quiet will get a little kid soured.

I'd be more worried about them on a water line so they'd have to be old enough to take orders or have another person to mind them when your in the water.

I had my Son with me Trapping (short lines) at 18 months on a sled in an old time car seat. He was in a snow suit, under a couple blankets.

He's 35 now so he made it!

I have to agree with Danny for hunting, but around the water have someone else along for a few years.

A rancher lady I worked with took her kids in the car set when deer hunting they bounced along just fine then and liked it a lot 3 years should be a good start if the fire is there feed it.

Thanks everyone. My brothers goal and mine is to have him fallow in our footsteps of loving all outdoor activities and sticking to them . just don't wanna rush it and push him away from it. My neice who is 14 she hunts couple times a season, but she is a jock lol basketball , soccer , cheer you name it that's what she focuses on. We are hopeing the nephew be more like us and not care about sports and spend time in the great outdoors .

Never to early to start!
My two sons (12 and 14) don't have much interest in hunting/trapping, but love to fish. My daughter on the other hand, loves going hunting and trapping with dad. She is 2 1/2.
First pic- she was 6 months old and "we" caught our first badger.
Second pic- about 10-12 days ago, hunting "big bucks". That lasted about 20 min. before she got cold and decided it was time to go home. smile
Third and fourth pic- this morning, after checking the 7 sets we have in the ditch behind my house. [Linked Image]

I took my daughter coyote trapping at 2or 3. Once I was really concerned I wouldn't be able to get out of the combine rut that had filled in with silt in I inadvertently slid into on a 38° steady rain day . I was several miles into the bottoms. Its amazing how much dirt you can move with a trapping spade when motivated. Luckily I dug enough whilst she slept in the warm truck to drive out.

Another time she squealed when I was bedding a trap. I looked up in alarmingly to see she was happly playing around trying to catch field mice. While my attention was on her not my hand I tested the set I was making and confirmed it worked well and would hold a 200lb human just swell. Luckily it was only a victor 1.75 and easy to get out of.

Danny Clfton nailed it on hunting. A lot can happen on a trap line safety first.

My daughter just turned two on November 23, I’ve taken her several times this year. Just have to keep a close eye on her because she wants to pet the puppies lol. She usually gets a good nap in when she’s being bounced around in her car seat on the dirt roads.
