Pa fisher & cat ??

Pa fisher & cat ?? - 12/22/20 01:22 PM

30 inches of snow in most places. I can get to 1/2 my locations but there is no place to park. I pulled everything 2 - 3 days before the snow hit us and have nothing out. Anyone able to set in other parts of the state? And every nite a new skift of snow, rain in a few days, I am expecting a flood in my backyard with temps going up and rain on top of the snow. No traps set......jk

I have 4 k9 sets out that I shoveled out. 28inches of snow will keep things hunkered down for a few days but now they should be able to walk on top with it settled and packed down some. So hoping my k9 sets produce a cat. They do before cat season just fine already caught and released four. So not going to change anything up or try to put more sets out in this weather for a bobcat. Thursday the snow will get taken down a bit then a deep freeze. Then maybe I’ll go set a few more sets.

For once we aren't getting what everybody else towards the middle/east part of the state got. Common up here with Lake Erie being open to get lake effect and 12" at a time for days on end is common. 3 years ago had 100" in December with 36" of that on CHRISTmas day.
Feel your pain. Be careful if have to shovel that wet snow.

First it was deep snow and plowing for 30 continuous hours. Thursday up to 3” rain plus snow melt. Pretty sure my swamp will be flooded. I’m hoping my trail cameras won’t be under water. Starting to wonder if I’ll get any fisher and cat sets out this year

I wanted to have 40 sets out by now. I have 14 out. I had to pull my best spots because I'll never make it back there again with 10 inches of slush. I'm not giving up yet but it's hard to stay positive. Ive seen cat tracks but they aren't moving much. Knee is hurting from the extra walk on less sets and it's slick as snot. I'm pulling or snapping Thursday and heading home for holidays and to see what this weather does. Going to pour all day anyhow. Looks like teens then right back up to upper 30s. What a mess. Every year it's something. Last year I was checking in a tee shirt. I think it took me 11 days to get my fisher but I had enough sets out to give me a chance with our short season.

Got 3 more sets out today, not feeling good about my chances for a fisher. Snow went down some but got real slick, quad just spins n roots on trails. No gut piles, think mine moved to other area’s . Can only do so much n hope for the best.

Around here if yo see tracks they will be back. Almost always. I mean see tracks in the snow that are recent, no summer or fall tracks......jk

Fisher trapping is new to us here in PA. Had a fellow trapper tell me that when it snows heavy the fishers tend to follow streams more. You more experienced trappers agree??

Re: Pa fisher & cat ?? - 12/24/20 12:00 AM

I am certainly NOT a fisher expert. In fact, I have never caught one, although I try every year. All I can add is what I’ve read. Yes, fishers follow streams. They have short legs so deep snows tend to restrict movement until the snow crusts and supports their body weight. Around here they like to spend time in the hemlocks. These areas of conifers tend to have less snowfall under them and fishers travel them.
Does this all sound correct to all the successful fisher trappers?

I don’t have any sets out for fisher now. A few beaver set.

I’ve had 15 fisher turn up in traps here in Pa. Most of them in dirt hole sets on logging roads. In my area, they seem to like the ridge tops in a mixed oak-beech woods with lots of grapevines.

Anyone know if there is snow in Clarion County?

Re: Pa fisher & cat ?? - 12/24/20 01:44 AM

There is snow in clarion county. I have caught 3 fishers in past years. They were by drainages and a swamp. I think water is the best place to narrow down where they travel. The only tracks I saw during this season was through a pine stand not along water though.

over head cover is one of their favorite places to move through;couple that with a stream and the height of land..now you have a prime location for a set

Caught this female beside a small stream in the pines. First one I caught in season. Most of the fishers I have caught were in stands of pines. No cat yet. [Linked Image]
Shoveled a lot of snow to make a few sets.
