How many guns

How many guns - 12/24/20 03:41 AM

Did your parents own when you were a kid. My dad had only 3 guns
2 shotguns and a 243. I have a few more than that but not near as many as some folks. I was just wondering tonight if our generation just gone wild buying and if it was normal for the generations before us to have fewer guns. My grandpa had 2 guns. A shotgun and a 22 rifle.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 03:43 AM

Dad only had a 12ga Remington pump and a Winchester .22. He did use a flame thrower in WW2 but they didn't send it home with him.

Back then we didn't have reason to fear our government.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 03:45 AM

My parents had no guns. They bought me a Ruger 10/22 when I turned 16 and a Remington 870 Express Super Mag Combo when I was 18. Those were the only two guns ever in my parents house.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 03:46 AM

My dad had roughly 20 long guns and 6-8 handguns at any given time. Nothing high end-he liked his Ithacas and about any .22. He collected Daisy bb guns and i think when he died mom had to deal with selling somehwere around 160 or so. I know he had more at one time. Kept a few of his favorites as keepsakes.

My Dad had a large collection of handguns.
I used to go with him to the pit to shoot on weekends.
We shot a lot when he was practicing for his crossguns.

A single shot bolt action 22 and a 410 shotgun. Both were for varmit control for chicken and sheep predators. Have both of them still.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 03:53 AM

Dad had a Winchester .22 pump,model 61 I think and a Smith model 17 . 22 pistol. Bought me a Ithaca 37 20 gauge when I was 13. Other than that , that’s all. I bought a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington when I was 15, dad bought it , I paid for it. Dad was wounded in WW 2, never hunted.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 03:55 AM

My Dad had a 243 he bought at an auction, a 10/22 he bought new, and a 357 he bought for protection.

My dad was a rifle loony. He bought and traded guns constantly. Unfortunately I took after him in that regard. I've let some go that I wish I hadnt. Including two Savage 99s in 358.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 04:09 AM

My dad had a 12 gauge a 410/22 over under and a 22. We never shot for fun, just hunting. No handguns.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 04:15 AM

My Dad had a .22 rifle which he bought new at the end of WWII, a winchester model 63 which I now own.
He also had a double barrel Cresent 12 ga shotgun. It was a beast. long barrels and tight chokes. No good for everyday country boy shooting.
Later he bought a Marlin 336 in .30-30 which he used for deer hunting with the uncles. Deer hunting with the uncles was more about getting together, drinking beer and playing cards than deer hunting. In all the years I hunted with them, about 6 years no one ever fired a shot at a deer.

My Mom was not opposed to guns at all. she grew up in northern WI and guns were just like any other tool. In fact before i got my divers license she would drive me out to hunting spots, drop me off and be back around dark to pick me up.

I own probably the most guns I have ever owned now and I hunt the least now since I started.

I probably should sell some.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 04:19 AM

That's funny about no one firing a shot in 6 years.
Posted By: James

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 04:23 AM

My mother was opposed to guns, but my Dad kept a double barrel shotgun and a .38 Special revolver.

The shotgun had a length of pull suited for a ten-year-old. My grandfather traded two bushels of potatoes for it during the Depression.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 04:31 AM

my Grandpa had one 12ga from the time he got married till a year before his passing 63 years when he gave it to my uncle

my other grandpa never had any the few times he went hunting he borrowed one he was WWII Navy

my Dad had just one shotgun until I was 11 when he added a 22 then a shotgun for me at 12 we hunted a slug only area so a shotgun was about all one needed for deer. he added more later I was the oldest so as I started hunting and shooting we did more , got into trap for a while , got into pistols some.

until I turned 12 and started hunting he had just the one weekend a year for deer camp. Fishing was his thing still is.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 04:43 AM

I have no idea. All I know is he kept most of them in a 30+ gun safe and there was never enough room in it. The ones I remember using growing up were a single shot .410, a mossberg 500 12 gauge, a marlin 30-30, a Remington 30-06, a marlin semi auto .22, rough rider .22 mag, a Ruger mark II .22, an SKS, and a hawken .58 caliber muzzle loader. I know he had a .357 revolver too, but I never knew the make and model, it was his concealed carry gun.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 06:22 AM

Dad had an H&R 9 shot revolver that I have now, a 20 gauge H&R single shot and a Remington bolt action 22. These are what I recall growing up.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 06:27 AM

My father had a Winchester Featherweight 243 and a Winchester Model 12 shotgun with a full choke. There was also a single shot 22 LR for skunks and such. As we got older, more guns showed up. A single shot 20 gauge, and a Savage auto loader shotgun. I bought a Remington Nylon 66 as soon as I could, but we took turns with the 243 for deer hunting. If it wasn't your turn, you were a brush buster.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 09:20 AM

Dad had an old 16 ga. Shotgun I can't remember what make. He shot one deer his whole life wasn't a hunter but went a few times. All I ever wanted to do when I was young was trap hunt and fish. I always own between 50 to 60 firearms and PLENTY of ammo
Posted By: KenaiKid

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 10:29 AM

Before we started growing, Dad had a .44 mag (bear gun), 30-06 (moose gun), dbl bbl 12 gauge (duck gun), a .22lr rifle (varmint gun) and his High Standard Double Nine .22 revolver he got in high school.

Like you said, most folks back then only thought of guns as utility. Words like "Tyranny." "Martial Law," "Confiscation," "Mandates" etc weren't even a thought for most people. I think the trend of political-cycle gun buying was started by the Clinton ban, and has only increased over the last couple administrations. Oh to live in simpler times...

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 11:06 AM

Well there was a lot of talk about tyranny and gun confiscation in our home and among my family when the gun control act of 68 was signed into law. My dad always had several guns. Ithaca model 37 16 gauge as far back as I can remember. A smith and wesson 38 special revolver, a pump action 22 and a .308 rifle bought when I was 11. He gave me his bolt action savage 30-30 when he bought the 308. His 22 sat in the corner by the back door. Wanted it to be handy for chicken protecting. Guns were definitely a tool in our house. They were a big help keeping everybody fed . My dad didnt believe in "wasting ammo". About the only target shooting I ever did was with my bb gun. Until I could earn money and buy my own ammo. It was still frowned upon by my dad but it was "your wasting your money not mine" then.

Dad had 7. A 25-06, 2 30-30s, 22 mag, 22 lr, 12 gauge and a 410. They seen lots of use every year especially when my brother and I started hunting too. They were passed on to me 2 months ago

My Dad had the normal3 guns until I was 11. On my birthday I received a long green box with the words
Remington written on it. He lit a fire in me and it caught him too.
Can't say how many guns we bought and sold.
And we had fun shooting everyone of them.
So buy another one today for someone you love

My father had several pistols, three rifles which I have one a Maynard his grandfather gave him. He bought a new Browning shotgun when I was pretty young, my mother wasn't too happy, probably took more money than they had! I never regret buying a gun, passed up some I wished I hadn't!

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 11:43 AM

Big thing in the couple decades or so is the move more towards specialisation. Instead of having a couple guns that can down a wide variety of critters, you now have your squirrel gun, groundhog gun, coyote gun, duck gun, trap gun, deer gun, elk gun, etc. Then along came the internet and guys are always chasing the perfect gun or the latest gun to come out.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 11:49 AM

My meth head stepdad had a few. I remember a shotgun and a revolver, but I'm sure there was more. He was a felon, so they weren't legally owned. One time in a fit of rage my mom drug my sister and I down to his sew-and-vac store (that he sold shortly thereafter for a huge pile of meth) and she broke down the back door while the place was empty. Someone saw it and the cops came, but since they were still married, they eventually just left. She found all the guns he had hidden around the place and took them to a pawn shop and sold them. He stole a bunch of her jewelery and sold for meth to get back at her later that night. Those were exciting times, to say the least. After that, we didn't have any guns in the house until I was 16 and bought a shotgun to shoot trap with.

My Dad had a Mossberg Mod. 190 in 16 gauge with the big adjustable Poly Choke.
He also had a 30-40 Krag. I still have both of those plus many more I've acquired through the years.
I've killed many a rabbit and squirrel with that old Mossberg. I take it out hunting once in a while just for the memories.

My great grandad had a handful that I remember

My great grandmother (mom's side) had a single shot .410, an automatic .22 rifle and probably a pistol of some sort that I never saw. she was a widow and lived on 300+ ac about a mile off the highway. She wasn't scared of one thing

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 03:00 PM

I see a trend with many of your house holds as I saw in my own. kids get to hunting age and the house gets more guns

likely a lot of our fathers got more into hunting as we got into hunting mine certainly did. good memories squirrel hunting and deer hunting.

both hold true in my house , when I could go shooting and hunting with my son I got more guns and he got guns.

he bought his first shotgun at 10 , we had looked at it at the gun shop before Christmas and his mom was going to take him to buy it the next day but when she called the store to make sure they still had it before driving over they said now they didn't see it , 2 weeks later we were in the store and spotted it. so we bought it then. a 20ga shotgun , well we had to go shoot it right then , so we went to the range , it was snowing sideways , blowing and we were standing in knee deep snow , had to walk in from the road , he was grinning ear to ear shooting His shotgun.

he had a little money saved , but he worked the rest off ,much of it splitting and stacking fire wood, he was so proud

he shot some pheasant with it and his first deer and a lot of trap.

Dad had an old single shot bolt action 22 cal. used for killing weasels in the chicken house when needed and to shoot cows and pigs for food. He didnt get a pistol until many years later in his life at the encouragement of his then son in law, but as far as i know never used it. Many on here I would think have enough guns and ammo to defend the alamo.

Re: How many guns - 12/24/20 03:26 PM

My Dad had a Marlin 30-30 and a Ruger .22 revolver. I got a .22 rifle when I was 8 or so, and that's when the firearm population at our house really started growing. By the time I was old enough to drive, there were probably a couple dozen at all times. Sure wish I had kept them all, but I loved trading them when I was younger. I would get bored with one and trade it off for something I just couldn't live without.

I've been in one room like that. The guy had a special concrete room built in his basement with a heavy steel door(held shut with a screwdriver LOL). His taste was for ruger revolvers, trap/skeet O/Us, and lever guns like the ones at your friends. In the corner, there were more G Loomis fishing rods than I had ever seen at a sporting goods store.

My grandpa and dad all had the same collection. a .22 and a shotgun. My Great Grandpa had 2 shotguns, 2 .22s, and a savage 101 .22 pistol that he carried on his trapline. It is probably one of my most treasured pieces. I'll never forget seeing my 1st red fox that he caught and then the 1st time I saw that pistol coming out from under his jacket.
