Carving another horn

Carving another horn - 12/27/20 09:35 PM

Working on a new powder horn. Going to go with a woodlands indian theme. Using patterns based off of Ojibwa bandolier bags. All the tight curves take a while to carve. Hoping to get it done this next week while I am off work.

Nice flow of lines on that horn. I can see where it will take some time and slow precision carving .

It would be really nice to see a tutorial of the process.

I've made 4 or 5 horns... In fact I just finished a screw tip a couple weeks ago... But I have yet to work up the nerve to try scrimming any, I can mess up the simpler parts of the project without adding horrible scrimshaw to the list. LOL

Very nice work.

I can't draw a circle on flat paper. Pretty amazing work there.

A screw tip is on my to do list. Engraving is fun. If you mess up, just scrape it off and do it over. And if you look at original horns, they weren't all artists that made them.

I'll try to take some pics of the process. Want to see just the carving or the entire horn making process?

You definitely should try one, if you can make a regular powder horn then a screw tip isn't much more work. I had to have a few tools and jigs that made it go a bit easier but it wasn't as bad as I feared it would be.

Curious if you’ve sold any of your work? I’d be interested if you are looking to sell. Very nice work!

I work on them in phases. Like most of the items I make, I need a break every so often. Beadwork, horns, sewing, primitive bows.

Got the second panel filled in. Tomorrow will be snow storm cleanup and turkey hunting. I'll probably draw the 3rd panel design tomorrow night.

Finally got the third panel all carved. I'm calling the carving on this one done. Time to finish the wood and add the hardware. And maybe make a fingerwoven or beaded strap.
