Re: Shouldn’t we be out trapping? - 12/31/20 06:17 PM

We got 5" of snow Tuesday night, flowed by a quarter inch of ice, then rain on top of that. My son said his 100# lab was walking on top of it yesterday morning. I pulled the snares I had out yesterday. More ice then snow tomorrow I'm on hold at the moment. I also think that the coyotes will go down hill fast after this weather. mad

What makes you think we're not trapping just because we are on here?
I got a few traps and snares out working right now,and a couple pelts ready to turn tonight.
As long as I got traps out I'm trapping 24-7.

But I think I get your point. Many are not going hard because of the uncertainty in the market.

I plunk myself down on a log with my phone to see what's going on here quite often. Pretty neat when you can stay up to date with T-Man while you're scoping out a beaver flowage.

Ive been playing ice breàker with my kayak the last few days checking beaver traps. Might actually catch a few tomorrow. Getting tired of the 1-3 beaver days when I hoped to have what ivr caugh so far on two days. Dropped 20 new sets today and started to pull parts of the line where I've had luck so far

This right here. I don't trap just to burn gas and have cold fingers. It just doesn't make economic sense. I still have a stack of tanned pelts from last year for crafts I suppose I could work on.

You got me

I "wannabe" better/more successful so I come here to see what I can learn as often as I can wink

I have 4 traps out now, it has been raining for probably 30hrs straight AND I was working all day at the hospital

Technically I was trapping since traps were "set" but I was not out in the field setting or scouting locations. Will be setting some more sets tomorrow but I am not looking to sell fur (southern fur is not worth near as much) as much as I am looking to decrease the predator population for fawn survival

I guess I should add that my son and I set out some coyote bait and snares and remade a lynx snare pen while out Checking fisher boxes. I guess our little snowmobile rip was more than just catching a fisher.

The rain we got yesterday played havoc with this dirt. Dig 'em all out - rebed. Relure all, and roll tide.

Re: Shouldn’t we be out trapping? - 01/01/21 01:02 PM

I only have 10 k9 sets and 8 coon sets out with my boys on the farm. Most k9 are washed out and 2 coon are under water completely. Monday I will hit my friends new property for his problem beaver and outer but will also set a few for anything else I see tracks for. But it will only be a few check days there due to time.

On Friday I will take the boys over to out friends place and run a mixed line but primary focus will be coyotes and fox. But I will set for coon and put a few caster mound sets.

Re: Shouldn’t we be out trapping? - 01/01/21 02:11 PM

I told myself there was no reason to beat up my body and my truck with snow on the ground covered in ice. It was a good choice the weathermen weren’t wrong for once.

I’ve been watching the full moon and I have a little run of 8-10 days off at the end of the month. I might run a small cat line around home 10-15 miles and see if I can pick off some cats I haven’t taken a shot at this year.

I pull pockets I had set last week thurs with cold ice. Reset 3 pockets last Sunday, an left all be sets, pull all traps in row Tues bfore winter storm hit, plan on reset. Few, not lot Sunday, start of warmer weather a lil, like do some late season coon in thaw, what time I got, scrape coon this morning.an hope late after noon muzzloader hunt, lot guys trapping this year. An fnt post told me that a supply venders for trapline. Not keep up orders, swap months. Because goverment stimlous money. $600 ui in past a week , open up savings acct. I did last summer for coupleinths. Saved up bundle, pay things off, spent way over 2 k pickup , ahead house payments. Months ,loan payoff , never been that far ahead on bills but back work months, savings been dwindling some. Winter storm an like 10 days no work, unpay. An unpay holidays. For me

Which is great, but it is 40 years later and there are no quarter taps (25 cent tap beer) at the bar. Could get the whole bar drunk for one mink. Be lucky to get yourself drunk, now. frown

$25 bucks is good money for this market especially when I sell in the round. I get same for coon, fox and other critters that are worth little to nothing on the fur market.

So with the help of Advil, I reset 136 leg holds today after our lovely rain. Dig out - snap - dislodge funny dirt - reset - cover - add new lure or bait and roll.
I set time goals to pace myself. 14 hours today and there better be some tight chains as a result tomorrow. Bobcats will move. 34 tonight in South Texas.

Blessings,
Mark

Solid productive day today after remaking and reluring all the sets yesterday.
We had a coyote getting a bit too close to the shop area so..... we set on sign and job accomplished;

The coyotes just keep trying to sniff turds I set close to where I find tracks.
They shouldn't do that. Shortens their life span by about "1 Death Ray."

I had a bobcat that crossed in front of the buggy about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Today, I had him tethered about 9:30 grin

I've now caught 154 coyotes and bobcats on this 12,800 acres ranch in the last 365 days.

Blessings,
Mark

Picked up a pair of reds today, son got a lynx. We’re looking for coyotes but we find this time of year to be harder getting them to bait. Here’s the second red, it’s more pale than the first.. [Linked Image]

This ground is great to work with Bruce, unless it rains. .54 inches had me holed up for one day. If it rains 2" it takes a week to get back out.
I spent 33 years trapping in snow, and I'll be honest. I don't miss it too much.

Blessings,
Mark

What a slacker! only 136 traps out?

Just kidding, I can`t imagine having that many out at once and being able to keep up!

It's a disease Dan. Or so some who've ridden with me have told me. The disease of seeing how many traps I can tend sun up till sun down.
The summer work is the worst for folks who have my sun up till sun down disease.
But, folks who hire us haven't seen trappers in the past work all day every day so they often referral what and how we do things to other farmers and ranchers.

It's just a love of what we do. People enjoy hard work more when they love what they do.
That's me and my Mrs. Worker bees.

Some days though, Mrs. says drop me back at the house (or ranch house, or motel, or wherever we are), and tells me I'll get supper going while you finish up.
And that's sweet too.
Run and gun and then dinner on the table after the fur prep.
If it weren't for the end of the day fur work, I could set more traps!

I'm hired for life at this ranch. Owner asked me Christmas Eve, how much longer I thought I could continue to trap this hard? He and I are both 63 years old. I told him, my knees and back are good. Should be another 30 years, give or take 10. grin

Blessings,
Mark
