Good job JP. Do you do anything special with them or just sell the fur? Since prices plummeted we’ve been leaving them alone except for the one I caught just to tan.

Nice catch JP.
How do the marten tolerate the fisher where you are.
I know some areas both species are plentiful.
Where I am marten dont do well where there are a lot of fisher.

They seem to co-exist fine here. Very often we catch Marten and Fisher in the same trap.

Just my experiences in Northern Maine. Ten years ago I caught about 6 marten per fisher. 2019 I caught 1 to 1. 2020 I caught 2 marten per fisher. I had a single trap at a location for about two weeks in 2020. It caught two marten & two fisher on the last check I saw fisher & marten tracks near the set that had a weasel in it. For some reason every trap I set may catch either a fisher or marten. One trapper operating near me this year had about 2 marten per fisher. Two other nearby trappers had about 8 marten per fisher. The 2 to 1 guy was about ten miles from me the 8 to 1 guys were about 30 or so miles from me.

Re: The Fisher were moving! - 01/04/21 01:50 AM

I always caught my limit of 10 fisher long before 25 marten every year.

Got a buddy that traps north of Algonquin Park in central Ontario, His quotas on one line which he regularly harvests year after year is 40 fisher and 40 marten.
Got another friend that traps south eastern Ontario and he has caught some seasons as high as 90 fisher a year.Marten are non existant where he traps.

Yes, pirogies are a comfort food for my wife and the rest of the family. She does them homemade, anymore, to get the full satisfaction they offer.

Ingredients
Filling:
2 cups leftover mashed potatoes

1/2 cup smoked ham, diced

1/4 cup frozen sweet peas, thawed

1/2 cup shredded Gruyere

Dough:
2 cups bread flour

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 egg, beaten

2 teaspoons olive oil

1 cup warm water

1 gallon salted water

1 small onion, sliced

1/2 stick butter

2 scallions, sliced

Sour cream, to garnish

Directions

WATCH
Watch how to make this recipe.
In a medium bowl, add filling ingredients and combine well. Set aside.
In a large bowl add both flours, baking powder and salt and mix well. In a separate bowl add the remaining dough ingredients and whisk until combined. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredient using a wooden spoon to form a ball. Cut in half. (You can freeze dough for another time, if desired.)
Flour a work surface and roll dough about 1/8-inch thick. Use a 3-inch biscuit cutter to cut out 12 rounds from the dough.
Place a dollop of filling in the center of each dough round. Fold dough over filling to form a half moon. Press edges together with your thumb. Seal the edges using the flat tines of a fork.
Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a simmer. Add perogies and cook for about 2 minutes. Drain perogies.
Meanwhile, in a large skillet over high heat, melt half of the butter and add the onion.
Cook onions for 5 to 6 minutes until slightly caramelized. Add perogies and the remaining butter. Allow to saute for a few minutes, then add the scallions.
Remove to a platter and serve with sour cream.

The Croatians and Ukiranians love their perogies.
I think they invented that stuff in the old country so they wouldnt have to eat their bootsoles when times were tough and they didnt have any real food.

Re: The Fisher were moving! - 01/04/21 03:58 AM

Nice action on the fishers!! They are one of the coolest looking NA furbeaers. We'll never have them, they need actual forests and northern ones at that. We're lucky to have tree squirrels. The Black Hills out in western SD has some marten, maybe some fishers will ditty mount across the plains to join them someday, never can tell.

No real culture of perogies here, not enough eastern Euro ancestry people.Norskies don't really stuff things, except whatever they put on the inside of a lefse. A couple of my aunts, who grew up speaking German has their first language, used to make "cheese pockets" and "fleisch kniflah" which are both sort of like perogies. Maybe I should learn the recipes someday. I like eating big pieces of meat and less flour-dominated things. And whole pieces of fruits. I had an order of perogies at the Peace Gardens the only time I visited that place. Does that count...?

Bruce, that’s one complicated perogie lol.

To make the dough we use sour cream and flour!

Filling: cottage cheese, egg, salt, pepper.

I think a Fisher would do better there than a Marten. Fisher love running around creeks and marsh. I’m sure you guys have that.
Don’t buy store bought perogies if you’re wanting to try them. Store bought suck balls!
Need them to be home made!

Funky thing about those fisher. The ones I have caught smell a bit of wolverine. We do have a yearly limit of one fisher, they are a relatively recent addition to our mainland SEAk area.

The pierogi i know, and we eat has potatoes and cheese in the dumpling, served with caramelized onions with yogurt or sour cream over top.

Around here it is a Polish dish. 50 years ago a friend ran this place:

Mrs. T's Pierogies is a mass market brand of pierogies in the United States. It is a product of Ateeco, Inc. based in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.

The company was founded in 1952 by Ted Twardzik.[6][7] They make 14 varieties of pierogies and produce over 500 million pierogies per year.[6] In the full sized pieorgie, the varieties include; 4 Cheese Medley, 5 Cheese Pizza, American Cheese, Broccoli & Aged Chedder, Classic Cheddar, Classic Onion, Feta & Spinach, Garlic & Parmesan, Jalapeno & Sharp Cheddar, Loaded Baked Potato, Savory 5 Cheese Blend, Sour Cream and Chive, and, Traditional Sauerkraut.[8]

The company promotes the Great Pierogi Race at home games of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Never smelled a Wolverine before so I’ll take your word for it.

We also make them with potato and cheese as well.

We bought 14lbs of cottage cheese from a farm and made a ton of perogies with it. Cottage cheese are our favourite.

Don't tell the fishers in North Dakota they need forests to survive.

Steven 49er- And where are those Nodak fishers found, the Pembina escarpment and the Turtle Mountains...? Nothing like that around here, and certainly no porky-pigs. Maybe parts of Roberts and Marshall Counties in ne SD and the Black Hills could support fishers (the Black Hills have porcupines), but for most of the state, I highly doubt it. But, I could be wrong, we'll see.

No limits in northern NY State, I caught 9 this past fall. But I’m done trapping them, no money in them. But I know all you guys just want to trap, have at it.

Here we go again! A few more Fisher to add to the list! Last one was huge! I’m going to cut his stomach open and see what’s inside. I said I would never do that again after the first one. But here I go!!

LOL!
I was walking back to the sled looking at the Marten for chew damage cause the eyes were missing. Was glad to see everything looked fine, then I thought I better check out it’s (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). Flipped it over and there was this vole with its head buried in there.
First glance I thought it was dead, but then I could see it breathing. Shook him out and stepped on it. Left him on the trail for something to pick it up for supper!
That photo is legit!

My best was 11.... in our 31 day season of December. The limit back then was 15.......and now it’s only 2. I don’t even bother to trap them now.

Did your Fisher population drop? I think ours is on the rise, but probably not nearly as high as yours was when you could take 15.
