snowshoes

We are supposed to have above freezing temps this week, snow melt.
Does anybody know how to stop snow build up on snowshoes, I think I get more tired from stopping and whacking my shoes every couple of steps, knocking the snow off than I do actually snowshoeing. I've tried vegetable oil, WD40, which doesn't last very long. Love snowshoeing, just don't like the added weight from the snow.

Spray PAM works the longest for me. Spray silicone close. Carry it in my inside coat pocket to reapply as needed.

Instead of just lifting our leg up. Snap our foot and leg when lifting every time work for me most of the time. Your snow shoes maybe to small for your weight and allowing you to sink to far down in the snow. There are several factors when buying snow shoes. The webbing may be a factor. Make sure you are not sliding your shoe forward but picking straight up before stepping forward.

Look up Iverson Snow Shoe, Lots of information on there web site, you also can call them. I see you are from the U.P. so they maybe just down the street. LOL

The snow will stick to raw hide webbing.

every year in summer i gave my shoes a coat of varnish hunted rabbits, fox and coyote behnid dogs all winter in the 60's and 70's we had plenty of snow dry fluffy unsettled snow was the worst i remember for walking
In case somebody thinks this is wrong I still have the shoes original bindings and all , they seen a lot of use and good as new I am not

Iverson Snow Shoe company was in Champion, Michigan. They use a neoprene type of material that won't rot. And White Ash frame.

They used to have a warranty: If you were to bridge them and they broke, free repaired. I don't know anymore about that.

Nice looking snowshoes. I like the Ojibwa model and have a pair made by Faber, a Canadian company. Mine are rawhide and they do tend to sag as the varnish wears away. I can't quite justify buying another pair right now but when I'm ready, I'll likely go with the Iverson.

I much prefer rawhide because it is quieter than neoprene. Tough to sneak up on a moose or caribou when your shoes are squeaking.

The Iversons look nice but notice they never show a profile view. In my experience the newer shoes never have adequate upturn.

I much prefer the old military webs made by CA Lund in the 1940's. It is still possible to find them in the original wrapper if you look around. Some of the old Snocraft shoes were made on the same jigs as the Lunds

I've got a pair of Iverson's Alaska, for my short but stout frame, and also Cabelas Cross Country with Alum, frames, and have the problem with both,

Iverson's are now in Wetmore, Michigan, just west on M-28 from where they were in Shingleton for many decades.

As White17 noticed, there were at least some Iverson shoes that did not have enough upturn in the toe section. Their modified bear paws were like that. I didn't use those for that very reason. I have not seen a lately set, so I don't know if they have changed them.

The only thing that works in the wet snow country I'm in is anodized aluminum frames with neoprene decking; something like the Sherpa snowshoes.

Whte17, the Snow Craft factory was in the town next to mine. When I was a youngster we used to buy edgings to cut up for firewood. We had a homemade saw rig / table that I would cut them up on.
i salvaged some nice pieces of Ash and Oak that I used for trapping stakes for water work. I always stored them under cover and most lasted for years. Believe it or not, some are still put to use in fall every year but the majority are gone.

I wore a pair of the Snow Craft shoes from when I was 13 until my late 30s. A good many miles chasing beaver and tracking fur to learn.

I went through two pairs of Iverson's. I was using the modified bear paws and the tail section simply wore out on each pair.

Always being a traditionalist at heart I hated to go to any of those synthetic shoes but once I got a pair, oh my, I would never go back. Many years ago I bought a pair if the modern type snow shoe with the material that looks like plastic or rubber in lieu of webbing. Great harness that are easy on, easy to adjust and easy off. They were called the Guide Model I think, and were from Cablea's, they are not made anymore, at least for Cabela's . They are an awesome snow shoe. Admittedly I no longer snow shoe many miles on weekends or evenings like I used to. With the price of beaver it is hard to get out in the bush and cutting ice. LOL

I used to varnish my wood shoes every year. I thought the neoprene webs were good but I darned sure never hunted moose etc. on them.

I DO believe that you are still using some of those stakes !! I am still using original CA Lund shoes made in 1942 &43. The dates are stamped on the tails. I think I have at least 5 pair stashed at various camps.

I bought a pair of the Cabela's Guide snowshoe. They actually became a running joke on the wilderness page for a while. Absolutely the worst thing I have ever tried to use. Finally I just kept them outside the door and only used them to go to the outhouse.

PRAISE GOD someone stole them from my cabin !!


There was a time that I was trying to find out what happened to CA Lund co. I was interested in finding the old jigs. Those old Lund shoes are still very popular up here and I'll bet a guy could sell a few if they were made like the old ones.

I never snowshoed for moose or caribou but I did for grizzly. This one tried to sneak up on me and not the other way around. The plane was five days late picking me up. Did I ever tell you that story? I've posted this pic a couple times before.
