Wyoming deer help

Hi all, my trapping partner and I were hoping to make it to Wyoming next fall. Wondering if any fellow trappers in the state know of any ranchers that may consider letting us hunt for a week or so. We are willing to meet the ranchers and ask for our own permission just looking to get pointed in the right direction. We should be able to draw tags in a fair portion of the state.

We may have some extra meats to sweeten the deal as well!

Preference points are almost always needed to draw now

That's true for all public land. Usually there will be left over tags for private property areas. That's almost all on the eastern side of the state. Not sure how much of that would be available due to outfitters leasing private ranches. Check with Wyoming F&G office for starters.

330 is correct. I'm sitting on 5 preference points for antelope right now and may wait one more year to be able to be drawn for the unit I want to hunt in. Deer are the same. Look at the state website under hunting and learn your way around. It will explain points, drawing odds for each species, etc.

I think your best chance would be to find a private ranch that charges a trespass fee to limit the number of hunters. Public land deer hunting in Wyoming is square miles per deer.

I have points and I know there are ranchers out there who will let us hunt for free or cheaper than through an outfitter, that’s why I’m here! I’m looking to get some knowledge before applying.

We paid access fees as far back as 1971 in Wyoming ...eventually in the 90's that Rancher leased it out to an outfitter.

I'm holding 9 preference points for Lopes. Just had to wait to hunt .

tanman, if you , I suggest you contact them. No hunter with an ounce of intelligence is going to tell you what ranch they may or may not have permission to hunt. Hunting opportunities in the west have gotten more difficult to come by each year over the past decade, and the 2020 draw was a disaster compared to the previous few years. Hunttalk.com and Rokslide.com are forums specifically targeted at the hunting community and have a lot of useful information.

2 years ago I had 0 preference points and applied for a nonresident antelope tag and got drawn. Why would you need so many points to apply? Did I just get lucky?

A lot of ranches out in this end of the state and for that matter ask for a reasonable access fee some limit the amount of hunters to keep it a good experience and not to overcrowd. Many ranches are managed as walk in or hunter management and allow free access. I would suggest you contact the game and fish here in wy. they will give you the odds for drawing and have maps of access on ranches lots of public land also. Have good binos and boots if you want a quality deer lots of them out here but its not drive by shooting.

there are plenty of places you could draw a tag every year or almost every year. I don't think it will happen very often on public land. Eastern side of the state usually has at least doe tags, private ranches. Last year was a disaster with no left over tags, I assume due to people being out of work but getting extra payments, or just taking advantage of being out of work and not needing to take vacation. First time in 26 years there were NO left over deer or antelope tags for the areas I hunt.

goldnut, yes things changed in 2020. I applied and drew antelope tags in 2018 and 2019 with 0 points. Odds as a non-res were 83% and 86% for the unit I applied to. I applied again in 2020 but failed to draw. Odds were 6.5% for the same unit. 25% fewer tags allotted and a threefold increase in applicants will do that. I don't know what the 2021 antelope draw will be like. As far as deer hunting goes, the draw has been getting tougher every year for quite a while.

I moved to Wyoming 14 yrs ago to get what your hoping for. Id take a week vacation in June and start door knocking cause I highly doubt any resident outdorsman is going to give away free private land to hunt. Not trying to come off rude but this landscape doesn't support the number of animal most people think and outfitters have sucked up a lot land. Ive lost land to outfitters since I've been here. Used to get free permission and over the years land owners have started to ask for money. What your asking for here on TMAN is basically to see a unicorn or Jackolope is what we call them out here. And i would suggest driving up with Wyoming plates not out of state plates, it will help. Like mentioned up above Good glass and boots and possibly purchasing a stair stepper so the hikes aren't so miserable if you chose to hunt public land. Good Luck

Why not check out public land first, there is a lot of it in WYO.

Look around the Dubois area, has a lot of public ground. Area 128

Public or walk in areas. Ive hunted there several times.
