Armadillos in Tennessee?

Armadillos in Tennessee? - 01/09/21 11:45 AM

I'm pretty sure I saw a roadkilled armadillo somewhere around Chattanooga. Are they common there? I guess there's no reason there wouldn't be.
Also saw a ton of roadkilled coyotes all thru TN, KY, IL.

Yes, we have armadillos here. I am in the western part of the state. Seems like they came right behind the fire ants.

They are all over Middle Tennessee. Frequently catch them in double door cage traps set up as blind sets.

A spotlight and a .22 is what I use. Right after dark around the farm I can usually do good.

Our wildlife department says me we have a few In Western NC. Never seen one here. I read a year ago that their northern migration might reach PA. Limited only by frozen ground.

They were in western Ky for a few years before I moved from there in 2015. At least 5 years prior to that I saw them on the side of the road just south of St Louis Mo. It is definitely a period of expansion for the species.

Re: Armadillos in Tennessee? - 01/10/21 12:44 PM

If armadillos took over East St Louis it would be an improvement. I was shocked at the craphole ghetto it is there.

A few here roadrunner here is SW Missouri. Not overly common though.

Saw my first armadillo in the late 70s along a railroad track while rabbit hunting. I've been told it's a migration thing from Central America and at the time of the Alamo armadillos were just then coming into central Texas.

I think this winter did a number on them here. Haven't seen one since the -15 cold spell and we have/had tons of them. Not even a road kill.

Seems like they moved into middle TN a few years ago. They will eat turkey eggs but they are slow movers so you don’t really have to lead them much.

They sure can jump when they take a .22 pill.

Possum on the half shell. It's what's for dinner.

I can remember dad calling them "Hoover Hogs" when I was a kid. Meaning in the time of the depression people ate them. I don't know if that is true or just a saying. I do know that armadillos are suspected of carrying leprosy so I will not be eating any.

Like J Staton I have heard them referred to as possum on the half shell

It got down to -23 here and we still got em. Dogs (paterdales) have found several along with many we have shot out of the hay fields this spring. I was hoping the cold had killed them, but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Seen my first one here in 1999 and everyone laughed at me saying I had drank to much. About a week later I seen one (maybe the same one, but a half mile away), I caught that one live and took it to the local COOP. I tossed it on the floor and asked just how drunk are you fellas as it scurried around. Now 20 years later we got the dang things everywhere. frown

As for eating the things, I have heard they could be and are eaten by some folks. I would have to be awfully hungry to get past the stink of the things. sick

I live in Southern Indiana near Evansville. Just north of the Ohio river and east of the Wabash. I’ve yet to see one here but cross over into Kentucky and their a dime a dozen around Henderson Kentucky.
I’m sure the rivers keep them at bay a little. My buddy was bowfishing on Kentucky lake many years ago and seen a dillo swimming across the lake.

I'll confirm that.I saw one and didn't know what is was. A month or so later one got ran over on the highway. 20 years ago there was one laying on the highway at a little crossroads store here. They got the newspaper down there and took pictures and wrote up an article. A few months later word got out that a truck driver that lived near there found it on the road in Texas and brought it back and caused a little excitement.
