Getting into live market coyote trapping. What is the best trap in yalls opinion that is the best on the feet

Mb 550 with shock springs are nice . Any trap with thicker jaws/ laminated will be easier on them but it depends on how hard they fight the trap ultimately.

I wish I still had a live market around here.

Any trap that will not let there foot move at all. A foot sliding in the trap causes problems. There is no perfect trap, each trap has good points and not so good points. A good shock spring will help. Rubber jawed traps do very little to help. But checking traps twice a night helps also. But the main thing that damages traps is how hard the coyotes fights the trap. You can have an old big male that just lays there and does not fight, Then have a 2 year old that never stops fighting. Best thing you can do in give them a shot of Dex as soon as you take them from the trap and hope for the best. But you will always have some that will not make the cut.

Well if you weren't so far away I have one lassoed on the bait pile that I'm soon to dispatch. I really need to find a live market myself so catching coyotes might be profitable.

Well When I was In the live market In (sc) we didn't have coyotes. So my go to trap was a Duke 1.75 short chained with 3 swivels and Inside lamination And the pans were replaced with a smaller round pan. I don't think I ever had a buyer not take the fox I caught.
I think a lighter weight trap will cause less damage to a foot of coarse I'm talking fox. But I still think weight has some effect on foot damage even on coyotes.

Belisle 6" Stainless Steel foot snare.Using 1/8" 7x19 Stainless Steel cable.
95% NO foot damage what so ever.

I'll put it up to any #3 for catch rate ,miss /fired traps.

We can't use foot snares in arkansas or I would use em. I think that would be alot of fun getting into something new like that. This is my first season selling live market and I have paid more attention to the feet. Never paid a whole lot of attention before cause it never got into my profit lol. He has been docking me for cut feet. And yall don't beat me up for this but I have noticed more damage from my mb's than my bridgers. This is also my first year running mb's next to my bridgers. I take the offset down to about an 1/8 inch and outside laminate and file all sharp edges round and smooth and four coil all my bridgers. It makes the jaws pritty much same as the mb's with surface area and round edges.only diference is smaller offset gap and 4 coils on the bridgers. All that said I still get a cut foot now and then in a bridger. I know it would probably be impossible but I would like to find a trap that wouldn't do that at all. I wouldn't be against selling all I got and re tooling to maybe jake traps? What are yalls opinions on the jakes?

Like I said sometimes It's the weight of the trap that causes the damage.

Jakes are all I run now, but you still get some damage with them. The main problems with Jakes is you will catch a coyote and the foot will be over on the side of the trap at the pinch point and that coyote will not make a live market coyote. This happens quite often if you catch many coyotes.

Just curious what are live coyotes used for?Hound running pens?

Yes.
The pen I sold to In SC was 1500 acres In size. They never shot any of the coyotes It was all about the chase.

If I had any foot damage I penned them up and doctored them for a time. Some of that minor foot damage will go away with a little care.

Re: Live market trap - 01/17/21 07:08 PM

IMO beav is on the right track . Lighter is better for live mrkt . I 'm not afraid to set a 1.75 duke for a coyote after all ,they realy are close in size to the old victor 3 n which has probably caught more coyotes than any other trap in history . When you say MB do you mean 550 or 650 ?

This. Keep them for a while spray the paw with wound spray and most will heal up. May cost you a 1/4 bag of dog food. That won't eat for around the first 3 days.

I'm running the 550's.

Re: Live market trap - 01/17/21 11:12 PM

MB450 closed jaw, 2 links of chain+ swivel+ 2 links of chain. Approximately 5 to 6 inches of chain and swivels anchored to an earth anchor of choice. I used 550,'s for a while and there was too much cutting and foot damage. Also the shot of dex is helpful + 3cc's of duramycin. If you don't mind me asking, what are the coyotes with good feet bringing in Arkansas?

Well that’s interesting. I thought I was the only guy that happened to running Jakes. I always figured it was just the way I set them.

Pawnee: It may be the way I set them also, but I will not run any other type trap. I have tried every trap out there and the Jake is my favorite.
