For all field purposes my minimum starts at .284. Everything underneath that size is playing without enough lead in the pipe.

This would be my starting point with the favor going to the 280AI.

I agree. The early 1900’s through the turn of the century had about every type of caliber under the sun. From barrel burning lasers to big old “one and done” rounds that were built to kill anything on this earth deader than dead.
I think the short mag trend is continuing with the latest offerings. The enthusiasm is definitely there with the newer cartridges.

It is a cartridge designed to shoot high BC bullets, not kill deer deader. It will be marketed to the long range paper killers.

Funny you should say that. The only big rifle I've hunted with in the past 20 years has been my old pre 64 model 70 in ought six.

Heard about that on Gun talk Sunday. I haven’t seen the ballistics but I think it has a very height coefficient

47 years of hunting, and 40 years of buying/selling/trading rifles taught me a lesson: save up my money until I could buy a Model70 in 30/06, pre64 or pre64 style. Save some more and mount a Leupold 2-7x or 3-9x on it. Then buy another when I wear it out.

The Garand does work nice. The 30-06 is a nice caliber. It's also nice in a .308.

I don’t post often but going to here. The 6.8 W was designed with high BC billets in mind. The guns are coming with a faster twist barrel to stabilize the longer, high BC bullets. Initially, this seemed like a poor idea considering no one was really making such bullets in .277 diameter. For guys that loved the 270 but weren’t able to play the “range game” due to low BC bullets, this is a nice upgrade. It opens the door for building a long action 270W and having it throated for the longer projectiles. While I’m not necessarily a fan of all the new whiz bang cartridges, this one intrigued me. Only because it forced the bullet manufacturers to finally look at the gap. I no longer shoot guns anymore because the places I hunt don’t allow it. But, I still go to the range with a buddy of mine and get to play with his stuff fairly often. He and I have discussed the holes in the caliber game for years. It’s nice to see that they’re finally trying to rectify the issue.

Add wild hogs and elk so I would also go out on a limb and say mule deer, prong horn, black bear & caribou. I NEVER feel ill prepared with my .25-06- ever.

The only reason I think some of these new cartridges will see the light of day is that they might lend themselves to the ever so popular AR platform(s) for dudes with a man bun LOL

That's my gun with the 2-7 only in featherweight. With a like new one in the closet for backup. Sold my standard weight last summer. I've sold dozens of 70's and the one I'm missing the most right now is a 270 super grade from the late 1940's.

ebsurveyor ^^^^^. Any opinion on the new M70 Featherweights, made now in Portugal (I think)? I've been eyeing one on the rack at my local emporium. 30/06 of course.
