Re: Older ammo... - 01/19/21 11:42 PM

I don't even know what that would run these days. Cabelas just had a sale on Federal #6 heavy field loads for almost $10 a box and that seemed like a deal believe it or not. I remember when it was about $3.50- $4

I remember 50 cents a box .22 LR, 2.50 a box 12Ga, shells, 28 cents a gallon gasoline

Now dollar a round .9mms , one to four dollar a round shotgun shells, and gasoline headed to Five bucks a gallon.

That’s a great collection ADC. With the price of .22 shells today, I’d start shooting them.

Only thing better than lead would be copper plated lead. I love copper plated lead BB for predators, second choice is #4 buck in copper plated lead when BB can't be found.

x2- That stuff should still be made somewhere but I guess not
b/c I cannot find it.

Savell- I'd still shoot that (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman)!

Re: Older ammo... - 01/20/21 03:23 PM

I don't think #2 lead is even available since steel became mandatory ... even if it's listed on some manufacturers site, no one I can find stocks it.
Hornaday supposedly makes a nickel plated lead bb for coyotes, can't find that either.

I think you're right on that. I'd sure like to find some in .20ga! They used to make it when I was in high school, Remington Nitro Mag. maybe other brands too.

ADC, that is the exact shells that I love so much for vermin. Roger's sporting goods near me used to carry it, but they was told discontinued as well.

Re: Older ammo... - 01/20/21 05:06 PM

ADC, I got a box of those Monarcs that you have there. Mine I bought in the early '50 for 34 cents BUT one out of every three or four would not fire so I quit using them. When I came home from service 1980 I found that box, still of course some did not fire, I gave them to a friend who collects shell. Just wondering if you tried to shoot them and if they all worked......jk

Re: Older ammo... - 01/20/21 09:44 PM

A number of years ago my dad and I used to purchase ammo from a store that was older than dirt. It was called Mill End. The ammo prices were always low.

And they had great deals on hunting clothes, gloves and winter boots. Hip and chest waders. There were 3 stores close enough that it was worth the trip. Clare, Gladwin and Bay City ( the larger 2 story). All gone.

Re: Older ammo... - 01/20/21 11:03 PM

Older rimfire ammo that still fires but has dried out, crumbling lube can be can be relubed with liquid Alox and mineral spirits. Just try to keep it off the crimped area.

If you're going to shoot it immediately you can give the bullet a quick light smear of lithium grease.

Good tips to know.

Had a Gibson's in my home town growing up. Bought 3 guns from there during my school years (well actually....my mommy bought them for me as I was too young).

RG .22 pistol. Peacemaker style pistol, $35.

Ruger 10/22 standard carbine. They had walnut stocks then, $50.50.

Remington 870 Wingmaster. 12 guage 30 inch full choke plain barrel, $129.

Only one I still own is the RG. It has killed a pile of fur.

Those were all bought while I was a freshman in high school. I graduated in '77.

I really enjoyed your boxesTrapper7. I too collect the vintage boxes. Do you go to the cartridge show in St. Louis? It was cancelled last year due to covid but is scheduled April 1-3 2021 at the Renaissance hotel near the St. Louis Airport. It is like a gun show but only cartridges, boxes, and advertising. There is amazing stuff there every year. I know it would be a long drive, but we get people from all over the states plus UK, Australia, NZ, Germany, Canada, and probably others I am unaware of attending.

Re: Older ammo... - 01/21/21 01:28 PM

Had a revelation while getting ready to post a picture of a box of Western Auto Revelation that had a $2.25 price tag on it........those photos taken with a cell phone camera include digital code to geotag the exact location those photos are taken. Out of concern some over exuberant Fed might kick in my mother's door to confiscate the stash, I have elected to delete my posts.

If you turn that function off in your cell phone, no worries.....but I had failed to do so.
