Turkey season coming, got birds?

Turkey season coming, got birds? - 01/20/21 10:56 PM

Wanted to check sets in this field without driving in the soft dirt, I knew the birds were in there so I snuck in from behind the row of cedar trees from a adjoining pasture and they kept coming to me.

Gobbling in my yard the last couple days.

Given Nebraska's fickle weather, I'd think it's a little early to start nesting though. eek

We used to have them like that here in South Ga, but not anymore. It was a gradual decline since 2005 -2007. Been low population (compared to what it used to be) for about 10 to 12 years.

It was common here in early 2000s to see 100 plus birds/day....fall and winter flocks of 30 to 50 were everywhere.

Not anymore. 5 to 8 birds together in the fall/winter is the new norm now. 1, maybe 2, gobbling on a spring morning, when it was 8 to 10 gobbling every morning.

Ga DNR is looking at changing the season, the limits, etc. But, our biologists don't have a clue what caused this.

Hmmm...that sounds very similar to where I am in Southern Iowa. 10+ years ago there were LOTS of turks...now, probably about 10-15% of what there used to be and it's been down like that for years now.

Lol!
They where following that can of shelled corn, you were rattling in your hand! Lol

Been seeing large flocks of them also. I see a lot of feathers in places where the predator's are getting some.

Our season is still open until the end of the month. Probably shoot another out of the yard this weekend. I can see hundreds in a day if I go for a hour drive.

Same for me here in West Central Ga. I hope they shorten the season and lower the limit. I only wish I knew what caused it. But I will say the same thing is happening right now in KY where I hunt. Use to be so many turkeys it was hard to hunt. Now I hear less and less every year.

Same here in Southern Ohio. You guys aren’t alone. The first year I hunted my buddies new 300 acre farm there had to been 30 Tom’s on it. Now your lucky to hear two gobbling on it.

We hunt gobblers only in April and May. Either sex September through January 31. Five birds a year as long as you buy the tags.

Lots of them where the sun melts the snow, can usually pick up a couple of bobcats, not this year! Several pictures of at least three different lions hunt this ridge, I think they're wrecking my bobcats!

Seasons are a long ways off yet but we had a very, very successful hatch last year and a mild winter to date. Lots of big flocks of birds on the landscape here.

I'm seeing them here and there, but not seeing big flocks. It's an easy winter so far so maybe they're spread out

You two would be better served to look for Turkeys rather than Toyota's .I know you've heard the phrase "Cant see the Turkeys because of the Toyota's"
