Nope, not a political thread.

I was reading where squirrels can remember over 2000 locations that they hid nuts at. After checking just 20 traps on the first check I'm thinking maybe I could get a squirrel brain implant? Forgot where I set two of them.

Squirrel brains are decent eating. Dredge in flour then pan fry until firm.

My maternal grandfather used to eat squirrel brains with no problems. There a few people a year who get Variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease from eating squirrel brains. I remember hearing there were 6 cases in Kentucky, some years back. Mad Cow disease is another variant of it. It causes brain lesions and death.

Jays and other corvids are very good at remembering where they stashed food too. There's been some neat experiments on PBS.

Sounds like a small risk to take if it helps you remember things.

I always figured squirrels just buried nuts every place and then when they get hungry just use smell or some sense to find them, don't think they could remember where they put them all.

I used to give a lot of squirrels to an old man and woman. I always skinned them and he always wanted the heads left on. She would boil them and he kept a hammer and brick or the bottom half of an old iron on the table in which to crack the skull and eat the brains.

Since all the diseases associated with brains, none for me !

Carl, you just have to train a squirrel to locate your traps for you or keep it on a leash and let it bury a nut by each set, for it to find later. Maybe you can use a muskrat for your underwater sets. That way you will always go home with some fur. wink

I can believe this because I’ve seen squirrels dig though at least a foot of snow and find food, it does surprise me that they can carry a form of “mad cow” l always thought that those types of brain problems were caused by bovine related species.

I read a study where they said that the hippocampus of the squirrel brain is oversized and that they were able to verify that squirrels were able to recall over 2000 locations where they has stashed nuts with less than 1% failure rate.

I just want to find 20 locations with less than 1% failure.

Maybe so. But I watched one squirrel bury a nut while bow hunting another come along find it and bury it somewhere else. Another come along and find it and bury somewhere else. All within a hour. Jays and such are the same way. They just check promising hiding places for food and steal the prize. Much like people today.
