Interesting Indian History - 01/21/21 07:22 PM

So I am reading a biography of Daniel Boone, who was an incredible character by the way.

It's a myth that white people took the land away from the natives in North America; in most cases it was sold to the whites by the Indians, at least in the eastern half of the US. In some cases the Indians sold it to the British, and then it was taken by the US in the revolutionary war. It's complicated to say the least.

Anyway, Daniel Boone was instrumental in settling Kentucky as he was one of the first whites to go west of the Cumberland Gap. At that time, he was under employ of some wealthy investors (The Transylvania company) and was given 10,000 acres of land in exchange for his explorations, but he never actually collected on it. At that time, the Shawnees were constantly fighting with the Cherokees over the area that would become Kentucky because it was such rich land for growing crops and hunting, with abundant wildlife resources. These two tribes were killing each other in battle constantly. About the time Daniel Boone came upon the scene, the Cherokees had got the upper hand and were in control of Kentucky. They then SOLD the area, most of the state of Kentucky, to this private company! Yes, at one time most of the state was privately owned and purchased from the Indians.

Then the Cherokees moved on and the Shawnees moved back into control, not realizing that the bluegrass area was now owned by a company made up of white investors who were sending in settlers and building forts. Some pretty serious conflicts ensued as you can imagine, and a lot of whites were killed, including two of Boone's sons. (He had 10 children and 67 grandchildren.) Fascinating stuff.

Just thought you'd find this interesting.

Daniel Boone was met rafting down the Missouri (alone) with packs of beaver pelts in 1811 by Astor's overland expedition to the Columbia. He had spent the previous year trapping beaver on the headwaters and had overwintered with the Mandans in the Dakotas.
The expedition leader Wilson Price Hunt asked him to join the party going west and Daniel reportedly got excited about it, but after sleeping on it decided he was too old. He was going to turn 78 in a few months.

It's nice to know natives were crushing each others skulls with war clubs before us white guys came along. I thought it was nothing but bliss before that.

Heard a story of Boone shipping a fortune of Ginseng up the Ohio. Can’t remember exactly what happened but he lost it all in the river.

Yeah he killed one of them when the Indians were fleeing, turns out it was the son of Chief Blackfish, and that is one of he things that precipitated the 11 day siege on the fort at Boonesboro where quite a few shawnees and settlers were killed

Allan Eckart's The Frontiersman is a must read for anyone interested in that era.
Follows Simon Kenton, a friend of Boone's.

He was Boonier than Boone!

Last night I finished the Andrew Garcia book titled "Tough Trip Through Paradise." It's a first hand account from 1878-1879. If you want to get a real feel for the mindset and social behavior of the Indian in the west at the time I reccommend you read it.

A feel for the mindset and social behaviour through one persons point of view.

Anything Allan Eckart wrote is well worth reading. That man has a gift,he certainly opened my eyes to the adventures on the eastern frontier. Most people in this country don't know this history exists, everything concerns West of the Mississippi.

Ryan, granted it's a single author and that single person's point of view. However, I didn't mean to suggest that the author makes any judgements because he doesn't comment on "mindset and social behavior," he just relates events from which readers can make their own judgements.

A first hand account carries a lot of weight in any discussion.

It's pretty clear that Kenton was one of the very few people Boone trusted when in dangerous situations.

On my father side there are Acadians who married a few mi'kmaq. The mi'kmaq and Acadians lived pretty close, traded and where allies. Sometimes even married. I'm pretty sure when the British "expelled" the Acadians they didn't let the mi'kmaq stay either.
