My Dad, Fred Space passed away this morning

My Dad, Fred passed away this morning at the age of 92. He was born in a house on the family farm and lived on the farm his whole life. He moved a little slow the last few years but still kept some snares set and worked on the farm every day. On January 4 when he went into the hospital he would not go until he checked his snares, then he asked me if I would skin the 2 red foxes he caught that morning. First picture is a coyote he snared last winter.
In the late 1950's and early 1960's he hunted in Alaska with bush pilots Cleo McMahon and Bud Conkel. Mrs Conkel wrote a book about her husband Bud and some of the pictures in that book are of my father with animals he shot . These hunts were filmed with a 16 MM movie camera and a few years ago he had them put in DVD form.
In 1970 when I graduated high school he took me stone sheep and mountain goat hunting in BC.
He loved elk hunting out of his cabin in Pitkin, CO and fishing there in the summer.
His favorite gun was a model 70 Win made about 1948. In the late 50's he sent it to Weatherby and had it rechambered from 270 Win to 270 Weatherby. He hunted everything with that gun. Grizzly, polar bear, brown bear, moose, elk and lots of deer and black bears. A heck of a shot, I never saw him shoot an animal twice. Even at the age of 89 when he shot the cow elk pictured, my son was with him and ranged findered the distance at 350 yards. The cow was trotting and he shot off-hand.
He will be buried right next to the farm he loved so much.

He lived a heck of a good life. He'll always be alive in your memories, and they will comfort you.

I had an opportunity to meet him twice. First time my cousin and I was at a Fur Auction just down the road from Space Farms. We walked over and found Space farms was closed due to damage from a tornado. He came out to talk to us and let us check out his mink farm across the street. When we came back to thank him he showed us some of his mink pelts. He then gave us a tour of the museum areas. We were only seventeen or eighteen years old kids, he treated us pretty well, he sure made our day!
The second time I ran into him was on a little 5-seater plane. I was headed antelope hunting and he was headed, I believe after mule deer with his grandson. After I told him of that day at Space Farms, he did remembered me and my cousin well. It was awesome reliving that day and talking about our hunts on that flight.
I was truly blessed to have met your father, he was a great man. Please accept my sincere condolences.

By the way, I did return to Space Farms twice with my family. Your father had told me of Goliath, had to see him!

I'll be thanking your father in my prayers tonight for the fond memories...

To be blessed with a long fulfilled life is truly amazing. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless

I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers for my Dad. Trappers are truly a family and Dad was proud to call himself a trapper. To him trapping was never about money, it was just a way of life.
