Wearing fur

Wearing fur - 01/26/21 05:15 PM

Another thread about famous/rich people wearing fur got me thinking. How many of us, or our friends/family wear fur?
Here's a few pics of me, my wife and some friends in fur items.

I'm far from rich, just learned to sew it myself.

Top pic is a friend. I made the hat, including the beadwork, for him.

I'm the guy in the raccoon hats.

That's my wife in her otter headband. She has a bobcat one also, but I don't have a pic of that.

Nice skunk hat, one of those is on my list.

I presently have a grey fox hat being sewed up. As soon as it arrives, I'll be showing it off, tail on the back and all.

I've been wearing my muskrat cap for a couple of years now. One of my LO's got some fur from me to have some items made for his family. Working on putting up enough beaver for a blanket and mittens.

I would challenge everyone on this site to wear some type of fur and give some type of fur as gifts we do not in most cases support our own product. Fur trim, hats, collars, mittens, scarfs, vest, jackets, teddy bears, key rings purses, get with it folks. If you don't sew it yourself support the cottage crafters.

Re: Wearing fur - 01/27/21 02:43 AM

I have wore my muskrat trooper hat for about 10 years now. It is a winter hat. I get several positive comments regarding the hat. Only a few ask much about the process involved in making the hat etc.
When I tell them muskrat, many thing of rats and are glad they are harvested. The other thing I noticed is that for the most part few put together the common thread of fur. By that I mean when you talk muskrats, many don't routinely then think about mink, coon, fox, etc.

I just had these made from 7 beavers I trapped and then tanned by Moyles. I got 5 pairs of mitts. Sold all in a few days, $200/pair. Apparently, that's a pretty decent price. They are so dang warm.

Otter fur backed buckskin choppers with beaver cuffs and a muskrat trappers hat. All homemade and tanned by Moyles.

Nice looking fur guys.

I think the more we wear fur out in public and the more people we get to wear fur, the more people will see the benefits of trapping and natural fur.

We need to start being our own media.

I wear my Fisher hat when it gets really cold out. It was 20 below when this photo was taken. I had just checked a couple rat and mink sets and the boys had just pulled up a walleye on a tip up that you see laying on the ice in the background. Yes, the bike speeds up operations when the conditions are right on the ice and the hat keeps me warm.

MnMan, you needed a fur face mask for that windchill while riding. grin

Re: Wearing fur - 01/27/21 03:56 PM

People see others wearing fur,and how good it looks and they want some. Then when they find out how toasty warm it is at 30 below zero they want more.
Everybody wears fur on the lake at winter carnival watching the skidoo races and other events.

Re: Wearing fur - 01/27/21 04:52 PM

There are a few fur items that look ok, but then there is a lot of it that to me just looks ridiculous. Likely makes you look like a weirdo in the eyes of a lot of people. I bought my wife a nice pair of beaver mittens, they look good and don't seem weird when she's outside in the real cold weather. A big messy fur hat with the animals face and all the dangling feet and such is just not for me.

Re: Wearing fur - 01/27/21 04:55 PM

I agree ADC, but there is a LOT of fashion that doesn't make sense to me, outside of fur garments. To each their own. You won't catch me in skinny jeans or a track suit.

Yes, too hot to wear unless it's really cold. I never wear mine unless it's below zero.

Great thread KSnow. We should all be wearing some fur. I have a muskrat trooper hat and I put a coyote ruff on the hood of my ice fishing jacket. My wife owns 3 coats and also various trim on garments. We just made a pair of booties for our granddaughter with fur trim on top. The more people that see it, the more they'll want it.

Thanks Lance. I agree completely. Most people don't realize how soft and warm natural fur is. And how bad fake fur looks.

Coyote or coon ruff on a coat, ladies fur ear muffs or head band, fur backed mittens all make a nice statement and are perfectly 'normal'.. Here a lot of people wear fur but you really only see the face hats and such at winter carnivals etc, probably same at mountain man rendezvous I imagine.

It seems a lot of folks want to go full fur, which is fine when it's cold but for normal winter temps you want fur earflaps and front with some kind of cloth for the rest of the hat so it can breathe. Also fox or beaver is thicker and thus warmer than say muskrat which makes a great hat for cool temps.

Re: Wearing fur - 01/27/21 05:51 PM

My wife likes to wear a light knit cap (which she makes) under her fur headbands. With the fur, she just needs a little something for the top of her head.

I'm comfortable up to about 30 with my raccoon hat, if I am not doing anything. Any activity and it gets hot quick.

I really like the "Canadian cap" style which is a wool crown and a fur headband. With or without a tail at the back. Popular in Canada and the northern States in the 18th century.

Re: Wearing fur - 01/27/21 06:17 PM

There is a difference between a fur head dress and a fur hat.
People wear fur head dresses at winter carnivals, and I wear a lynx head dress in winter when I go to the city.
In the bush I wear something more practical, like an earflap hat.
I have worked up about 20 different fur hat designs of my own.Combination hats can be a cross between something flashy and something practical.
