Growing up during the birth of Rock N Roll, I always really enjoyed the 60's the most. In the mid 60's it seemed like a new group was getting radio play daily. There was the British Invasion when groups from England ruled the air waves .Then in 65 the folk rock groups became popular ,then psychedelic rock ,then country rock. Who was your favorite 60's rock band?? Tom
Mole,While America was formed in England, the artists were Americans whose fathers were in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in England. Nelly saw the Animals in 68 or 69 only problem--front man Eric Burdon had just left the group. Tom
By far and away my favorite was The Byrds,Mcguinns 12 string Rickenbacker was unreal, especially in concert. I have tickets for my daughter and I to see Roger Mcguinn on May 15 in Hopkins Mn. At 78 heis still going strong. Tom
Chicago, Three Dog Night, Guess Who - all late 60's - early 70's
I always considered Chicago more of a 70s band, considering my age I was more familiar with Randy Bachman from BTO than his time with the Guess Who, but Mama Told Me Not To Come is probably more relevant now than it was then.
Crit-Ur, I would disagree with you concerning the Beatles. I consider them some of the best song writers of all time. I remember when the had numerous top 10 songs at the same time. Have to laugh at what our Jr. High music teacher said(quoting Mr.Grizwald) "10 years from now,no one will even remember who the Beatles are. That statement was made over 55 years ago. I bought the Beatles first album for 49cents at the Emporium in downtown St. Paul, boy have times changed. I never cared a lot for either Lenon or McCartney as solo artists or their later groups Tom
Lots to choose from for sure-Mid to late 60's was an explosion of music of all sorts. Lots of bubblegum rock, heavy rock, motown, and folk. Always liked Gordon Lightfoots music.Lots of blues rockbands too,Ten years after, and the Who were great english bands. I also liked the bands with the horn sections like Chicago and Lighthouse.
Early 70's before disco was just as good.Led Zed,Pink Floyd,Uriah heep.
Some other very good ones--Gerry and The Pacemakers,The Kinks, The Hollies,The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield(They were the best known, one hit wonders) For What its Worth ,was their only top 40 hit. Rock and Roll woman should have been much higher rated than it was. The Boxtops,The Mamas and Papas,Hermans Hermits, Jefferson Airplane,The Stone Ponies(Linda Ronstadts first band), The Turtles, The Zombies,The Vogues,The Supremes, The Ronettes,The Spencer Davis Group--and the list goes on and on. Tom
Roy Orbison had a wonderful voice and gave us musical pleasure for over 30 years. His last recordings were with The Traveling Willburys--Roy Orbison,Bob Dylan,George Harrison,Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty. Roy died shorly after the hit single--End of The Line. Dylan and Lynne are the only members of the group, still with us. Tom
Beach Boys and Jefferson Airplane. Actually when I think about this there were a ton of rock groups and individual singers I liked. How about Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Monkees, Dave Clark Five, Crosby Stills & Nash, Herman's Hermits, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Lovin' Spoonful, Fleetwood Mac, Sly and the Family Stone, The Everly Brothers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Bee Gees, The Temptations, The Turtles, The Supremes, Jan and Dean and Elvis.
Alot of great singing groups and solo artists mentioned in all the posts, the oldies music is still the best.alot of todays music has no substance in my opinion and I cant stand what I call loud screaming in the mic. music.Todays groups just dont have staying power all to many are short lived, here and gone.
Agree with them all. Glad to see The Band added. I will add Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Can anyone see music from today being played on the radio 50 years from now?
Saw Bob Seger System in the late 60s--at that time Ramblin Gamblin Man was his first hit song. It would be a few years before he had his long string of hits. Used to win concert tickets quite often Saw Johnny Cash.My wife is a country fan so she had her doubts when I won tickets to see Paul Revere and The Raiders, this was after lead singer Mark Lindsey had left. Revere put on such an entertaining show ,my wife said it was the beat concert she had ever seen. Took my wife and daughter to see Chris Hillman(Original Byrds Bassist) when he had the popular country band--The Desert Rose Band. After the concert he was signing autographs,so we went over to get one. I was asking Chris if my wife could take his picture, before I finnished asking--my wife snapped a picture. I apologised for her not waiting for his ok.He laughed ,got up ,and said come with me---he took us around the building and had my wife take pictures of him with my daughter and myself. Here was a soon to be--Member of the Rock n Roll hall of fame--going out of his way,to make us happy. I will never forget Hillmans kindness or the pictures. Tom
John, don't forget J.D. Souther--he madeup the rest of the Souther/Hillman/ Furay band. I really liked Joe Walsh and tThe James Gang,He also performed with another group,Barnstorm--before really hitting the big time as a member of The Eagles. Tom
The Beatles are the most prodigious band of the 60’s. There output has yet to be matched. Songwriting, musicianship, hits, impact, it’s truly remarkable. Love em or hate em! Fyi-Lennon and Mcartney switched instruments on Helter Skelter, which to this very day is one of the hardest, most raucous songs of all time. Compare that with Love Me Do and you know you’re listening to a group at it’s Zenith that lasted for almost a decade straight. They could do it all
Neil Young was part of Buffalo Springfield,so he started in the 60s. The Band has been mentioned--Robbie Robertson was their driving force. How about Donavan,Berry Mcguire,Kenny Rogers and the First Eddition. The Young Rascals,The Beau Brummels. Tom
Who can forget??/ Hedgehoppers Anonymous??? Its Good News Week. "someones dropped a bomb somewhere, contaminating the atmosphere and Blackening the skies!! Tom
I guess you must have been a teenager in the 80's Posco. Seems like those are the years music has the most impact on our lives. But in defense of the 60's there were many more impactful bands then ,than in the 80's or other decades. Tom

I was twenty in 1980, Tom. Music has a way of taking you back to a time and place.
You mentioned Tom Petty, great artist. He was greatly influenced by The Byrds and Roger Mcguinn. He released several songs written by the Byrds--I'll feel a whole lot better ,comes to mind. He also wrote and recorded with Roger Mcguinn---they had an 80s hit together--King of The Hill. The last album Petty produced was just before his death. That was by former Byrd -Chris Hillman. R.I.P. Tom Petty. Tom
Back in the late 60's I had a small radio and at night the am stations from the states would "skip" in. Used to listen to WLS I think it was from Chicago. Some of the songs I heard were-Bee Gees -"you dont know what its like",Friend and lover-"reach out in the darkness" Donovan-"hurdy gurdy man" and lots of others-they played those songs a lot.
Boco.WLS was indeed from Chicago,I used to pick it up late nights in MN. I really liked the Bee Gees during their pre disco times. My Donovan cassette bit the dust not long ago--Sunshine superman and Atlantis ,were as good as Hurdy gurdy man. ADC--I saw that one of tour 80s groups --did cherry pie. The only song of cherry pie I heard was by Skip and Flip and I doubt they were anywhere near the same song. Skip went on to become the Byrds bass player from 1970 to 1973,he died a couple years ago. Tom
i dont think Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had to wear make up to get peoples attention . Dont remember seeing Eric Clapton wear it either. AC/DC showed up in the 70's and Angus was/is a real character in that school boy outfit, running around like a chicken on meth. The guy can play that guitar though and I always like listening to them.
There was this young crew that started out in Jacksonville Florida in the mid 60s. Not known as a 60s band but exploded in popularity in the 70s. They did settle on the name for the band by 1969. Surprised they haven't received honourable mention on this thread. I think I new every lyric to all the big numbers in my teens, lol.

Borrowing a quote from Young Guns...I gotta part with a nasty secret...there is a Back Street Boys song I Iike. Just one, and my man card remains intact.
Looking at little girls with bad intent, I don't like any song he does,
Quote
Just describing the character in the song as evil nothing more. IMO
I agree...Simply describing an ill intended person...
Perhaps fewer people these days in our "main stream" should have sand castle virtues
And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away In the tidal destruction the moral melee The elastic retreat rings the close of play As the last wave uncovers the new-fangled way
But your new shoes are worn at the heels And your suntan does rapidly peel And your wise men don't know how it feels To be thick as a brick
Kiss was nowhere near the 60's. We have missed many good 60's bands . Freddie and the Dreamers,Simon and Garfunkel,The Righteous Brothers,The luvin spoonfull,Shadows of Knight. Tom
One person has really been neglected on this post. While his voice was never the greatest, his songwriting talents were something else. He wrote several hits by the Byrds,Turtles ,peter ,paul and Mary and several others. He also had many hits on his own. You may have guessed it----

Bob Dylan Tom
Yeah Dylan had some talent but for the best lyrics ever, my vote goes to John Prine

Elvis, great voice, great performer. His influences on rock music were much more noticeable in the 50s than in the 60s. Seemed like in the 60s especially early 60s--Elvis was more into being a movie star. Elvis was not a song writer. The most influential 60s groups were also proficient song writers---Beatles,Stones,Dylan,to name a few. Aother group I really liked was The Springfields, and Dusty Springfield as a solo artist when she left the group. I just love--Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Tom

Silver Threads and Golden Needles is a great song. Had forgotten that one. Years ago, I saw Three Dog Night in person in concert. Great group. The Show Must Go On was my favorite of theirs.
